Introduction

Hi everyone! Where am I you may wonder? Already back in France! I didn’t follow the whole route I was planning to do. Indeed, I was lacking two things: money and above all energy. I think I had underestimated how expensive it would cost me to stay that long in Italy and how tiring it was to be backpacking in this rhythm for such a long time. Anyway, it was an exceptional experience, which I'll be writing more about soon. But for now, here is another episode of my adventures. I hope you will like it!

Let’s Go!

After my exciting discoveries at the Architecture Biennale of Venice, in addition to a globally quite pleasant but tiring stay in this beautiful city, it was time for me to have some rest in a quieter atmosphere. Luckily, thanks to some relation of my dad, I was invited for a stay in Genova, on the other coast side of Italy…

Let's take a step back in time for a better understanding. In the 1980s, my grandparents offered rooms to foreign students in their large house in Grenoble. At the time, Antonella, a young Italian student, was looking for accommodation and met, a friend of my grandmother who told her about this possibility. From then on, she lived in their house for a year or two and met my father and his brothers. Later, her mother met my grandmother and they became friends. To be welcomed so warmly and to be able to reconnect not only with Antonella but also with her mother and son - the people I now call my Italian family - was really pleasant.

When your name is Lorenzo, you either speak Italian or you get everyone disappointed. It is true that I have Italian origins but was never taught as my grandfather was speaking a dialect and didn’t transmit it to my mum. Also, I had never taken some time to learn it by myself. Since my arrival in Italy, this had to change and I therefore began to practice here and there when I had the opportunity to. For example, when ordering food, speaking to people at the reception of hostels, in gelaterias, cafés, and bars as well as practicing on Duolingo every day.

Staying at Antonella’s therefore incited and helped me to improve my skills and knowledge. Still, Antonella could explain things to me in French when it was necessary. Staying with them felt indeed quite satisfying as I was completely immersed in the Italian culture.

Geno(v)a

The evening of my arrival at Antonella’s in Genova, she had prepared the well-known but nonetheless authentic “Pasta Al Pesto Alla Genovese”. The very traditional Pesto sauce everyone might have already tried. Most of the time though, from an industrial can or jar… I can tell you this one definitely tasted WAY better. From the perfectly-al-dente-timing Pasta to the quality of ingredients – olive oil, Parmigiana Reggiano, fresh Basil, pine nuts, and… Small potatoes and green beans! Yes, that is what the original version includes. It was so tasty! Also, let’s be honest… Everyone should be able to cook a homemade pesto. The most important thing is the ingredients’ quality. Often, the simplest recipes are the best ones!

My first morning in Genova was spent walking around the city, discovering the surroundings. I passed in front of the quite imposing San Lorenzo Church, also went through the small streets of the city center, and saw an astonishing three-mat sailboat.

Firenze

But another train was already awaiting… Indeed, a few weeks before that, my uncle who was aware of my trip had advised me he would be in Firenze for a wine business meeting around those dates. I couldn’t miss this family meeting and decided on the spur of the moment to hop on a 4 hours train journey to join him just for dinner. It is funny having the capacity to take trains to join someone over the country just as you would take a subway or a bus to join a friend over town. The Interrail Pass is a complete game-changer!

In fact, this train journey was quite productive. It enabled me to finish the third episode of my newsletter. I have to say that writing on a train is rather pleasant. Even if sometimes you get caught out by the beauty of the countryside and realize that you've stopped writing 30 minutes later…

Arriving in Firenze, it was rainy and my uncle was not ready to meet yet. I came across the Palazzo Strozzi and visited the “Reaching the Stars” exhibition where I could enjoy one of the most renowned collections of contemporary art in the world.

Over 70 artworks by leading Italian and international contemporary artists, among them Maurizio Cattelan, Cindy Sherman, Damien Hirst, Lara Favaretto, William Kentridge, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Sarah Lucas and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, were exhibited to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo collection.

In the meantime, I was given the responsibility by my uncle to find a suitable restaurant in town. After a couple of online research, I could find the one: “La Antica Trattoria di Titto”. A very authentic restaurant, which ticked the most important box: a fairly good wine list!

Back to Genova

After a trip back to Geno(v)a, we went with Antonella to the market on her orange Vespa to buy groceries for the aperitive and dinner she had planned with friends on the rooftop of their “appartemento”. She then took me to Boccadasse, a nice area on the outskirts of Genova where I had a walk while she was doing family business.

The next day, on a stroll through Geno(v)a city center, I discovered that it was “Genova BeDesign Week”, during which crafts and design are given pride of place. For me, it was an opportunity to meet some inspiring entrepreneurs. Although I didn't really meet any inspiring entrepreneurs offering solutions to climate or social challenges, I did get to discover “La Sartoria Sociale EcoPoetica”. A space run by the non-profit organization “Il Limone Lunare” whose team aims to inspire and develop creativity as social action from a poetic, ethical, and ecological point of view.

The association is actually the Ligurian local contact point for the “Danilo Dolci Centre for Creative Development” of Palermo, Sicily. Through the organization of maieutic workshops, they follow in the footsteps of the poet, sociologist, and non-violence activist.

After a little research about him, I understood Danilo Dolci marked entire generations with his maieutic approach. Today, the Sartoria Sociale EcoPoetica space is quite active in the deployment of different kind of projects, training, and workshops for formal and informal groups in the fields of art, ecology, pedagogy, and healing that stimulates people's talents and insights. The reciprocity of communication between the participants and the workshop coordinators is one of the cornerstones of the workshop. It takes place through dialogue as a dialectical tool for knowledge and shared experience.

Rapallo e le Cinque Terre

Leaving Antonella’s place, I was heading not far from Genova at her mother, Adriana. Adriana is living in Rapallo and is running a Bed and Breakfast there with the help of her grandson, Eugenio. Upon my arrival at Rappallo’s train station, Eugenio was waiting for me. He took me to Adriana by car and I was once again given a warm welcome there.

One small detail of this trip though was the sticky floor and the quite intense – but rather delicate – smell near my seat. As my train was arriving on the platform in Genova, I had by accident dropped a bag in which was a very small hand-painted bottle of 15 years Modena Vinegar I had bought from an artist in Venice. As I picked up the bag, I didn't notice the bottle was broken. But when I got to my seat, I could see vinegar dripping from my bag... As the bottle was not completely broken, I kept it in my bag in the small paper pocket I was given when I bought it…

Arriving at Adriana, I told her the story and managed to salvage the rest of the vinegar that was left and offered it to her, in addition to some very nice chocolate I had bought in Switzerland. She was very pleased. Even at 88 years old, she is still doing great! After this reunion, we spoke about my journey, my stay in Genova, as well as about my eccentric grandmother. She was quite nostalgic about her. She also insisted that I would go to the Cinque Terre. It was obvious that I should have planned to go there but still, I had not realized how close it was…

The next day I took a train from Rapallo to Riomaggiore, the most southern village part of the Cinque Terre, and tried to find the way to begin the hike. It was not well indicated and I was surprisingly the only one starting the hike from there this day. Through a very steep path, I began going up and arrived after half an hour at some point on the hill where I could read on a board:

You are walking on the steep, picturesque path which, until the Via dell'Amore was built in the early 1920s, was the only connection between the villages of Riomaggiore and Manarola, separated by sheer cliffs falling to the sea. The path crosses the Costa del Corniolo where you can still see the terraced fields, with their dry-stonewalls and vine plantings. Recommended for expert excursionists.

I sent a few photos and this paragraph to my family, making fun of the fact that I was apparently an expert excursionist and my father quickly brought me back to order and made me promise to be as careful as possible pointing out the fact that a French tourist apparently died on the Cinque Terre paths recently, not having taken enough precautions…

Of course, hiking on these paths is not a walk in the park of your neighborhood. And the surrounding beauty is such that it would be easy for anyone to be taken by surprise by a precipice. But as far as I can tell if you are in shape and a minimum careful, there is nothing to be much worried about. And if you are now doubting about it, you should give it a try in person someday. Also, if you don’t feel like hiking that much, you can still take the train and visit each village one by one. It only takes a few minutes from one village to another.

One hour after reaching Manarolla, I found myself in another village, Volastra where I could fulfill my jug of fresh water and buy some focaccia before continuing my route. There I bumped into two young Canadians, Yugi, and Darian, who were touring Italy. At this point, we continued our route separately but met again luckily in the next village, Corniglia. There, we had lunch plus a glass of local wine together in a very pleasant bar “A’Càneva” before heading back on the trail to reach the most iconic village of the Cinque Terre, Vernazza. As I had done a bit more route than them, I decided to take the train from Vernazza while they would continue their route to reach the last and most crowded village of the Cinque Terre, Monterosso. After a quick swim in the water, I took a train back to Rapallo where Eugenio was waiting for me to in a fancy modern restaurant.

On the next and final day – I had extended my stay with Adriana – she invited me to spend the day together so we could take the ferry to the magnificent Abbey of San Fruttuoso, a monastic complex on the Golfo Paradiso near the town of Camogli. It was quite a pleasant journey and discovery there. Indeed, on our way, we stopped quickly at Porto Fino, a beautiful village on the coast. Furthermore, the location of the Abbey is unbelievable, and reaching it from the sea is surreal! We then took another ferry – on which we were the only passenger for a while – and went to Camogli to have lunch there from a fresh pasta manufacturer, “Pasta Fresca Fiorella”.

The same day, I was heading to Ferrara on my way to Rome. There I visited the old town, its castle, and the Saint Georges Cathedral and finally had lunch at “Al Brindisi - La Più Antica Osteria Del Mondo” – the oldest tavern in the world – according to the Guinness World Records. It was already in use around 1100, providing accommodation and food for workers engaged in the construction of Ferrara Cathedral.

At that time, it was called 'Hostaria del Chiuchiolino' (from 'ciuc', drunk). On the first of June, after a night at the Student’s Hostel of Ferrara, I was finally and unfailingly heading to the capital city. As we say…

Introduction

Bonjour à tous ! Où suis-je, te demandes-tu peut-être ? Déjà de retour en France ! Je n'ai en effet pas réalisé la totalité du parcours que j'avais prévu de faire. En réalité, il m’a manqué deux choses : de l'argent et surtout de l'énergie. Je pense que j'avais sous-estimé le coût d'un séjour aussi long en Italie et la fatigue d'un voyage en sac à dos à ce rythme sur une aussi longue période. Quoi qu'il en soit, ce fut une expérience exceptionnelle, sur laquelle je reviendrai bientôt. Mais pour l'instant, voici un nouvel épisode de mes aventures. J'espère que cela te plaira !

Let’s Go!

Après mes découvertes captivantes à la Biennale d'architecture de Venise, en plus d'un séjour globalement assez agréable mais fatigant dans cette belle ville, il était temps pour moi de me ressourcer dans une atmosphère plus calme. Heureusement, grâce à une connaissance de mon père, j'ai été invité à séjourner à Gênes, sur la côte opposée de l'Italie...

Revenons un peu en arrière pour mieux comprendre. Dans les années 1980, mes grands-parents proposaient des chambres à des étudiants de nationalité étrangère dans leur grande maison de Grenoble. À l'époque, Antonella, une jeune étudiante italienne, cherchait un logement et a rencontré une amie de ma grand-mère qui lui a parlé de cette option. Dès lors, elle a vécu chez mes grand-parents durant un an ou deux et a fait la connaissance de mon père et de ses frères. Par la suite, sa mère a rencontré ma grand-mère et elles sont devenues amies. Le fait d'être accueillie si chaleureusement et de pouvoir renouer non seulement avec Antonella, mais aussi avec sa mère et son fils - les personnes que j'appelle aujourd'hui ma famille italienne - fut vraiment une expérience formidable.

Quand on s'appelle Lorenzo, soit on parle italien, soit on déçoit tout le monde. Il est vrai que j'ai des origines italiennes, mais on ne me l'a jamais appris car mon grand-père parlait un dialecte et ne l'a pas transmis à ma mère. De plus, je n'avais jamais pris le temps de l'apprendre par moi-même. Depuis mon arrivée en Italie, il fallait que cela change et j'ai donc commencé à pratiquer ici et là quand j'en avais l'occasion. Par exemple, en commandant à manger, en parlant aux gens à la réception des auberges, dans les gelaterias, les cafés et les bars, ainsi qu'en m'exerçant sur Duolingo tous les jours.

Ce séjour chez Antonella m'a donc incité et aidé à améliorer mes compétences et mes connaissances en italien. Antonella pouvait néanmoins m'expliquer certaines choses en français lorsque cela s'avérait nécessaire. Ce séjour chez eux a été très enrichissant, car j'ai été complètement immergé dans la culture italienne.

Geno(v)a

Le soir de mon arrivée chez Antonella à Gênes, elle avait préparé les célèbres mais non moins authentiques "Pasta Al Pesto Alla Genovese". La très traditionnelle sauce Pesto que tout le monde a sans doute déjà goûtée. La plupart du temps, elle provient d'une boîte ou d'un bocal industriel... Je peux vous dire que celle-ci était bien meilleure. Des pâtes au timing parfait à la qualité des ingrédients - huile d'olive, Parmigiana Reggiano, basilic frais, pignons de pin et... petites pommes de terre et haricots verts ! Oui, c'est ce que comprend la version originale. Tout était vraiment savoureux ! Et puis, soyons honnêtes... Tout le monde devrait être capable de préparer un pesto maison. Le plus important étant la qualité des ingrédients. Souvent, les recettes les plus simples sont les meilleures !

Lors de ma première matinée à Gênes, je me suis promené dans la ville, à la découverte des environs. Je suis passé devant l'église San Lorenzo, assez imposante, j'ai aussi parcouru les petites rues du centre ville, et j'ai vu un étonnant voilier à trois mâts.

Firenze

Mais un autre train attendait déjà... En effet, quelques semaines auparavant, mon oncle qui était au courant de mon voyage m'avait prévenu qu'il serait à Firenze pour une rencontre professionnelle viticole à peu près à ces dates. Je ne pouvais pas manquer ce rendez-vous familial et ai donc décidé sur un coup de tête de sauter dans un train - d'une durée de 4 heures - pour le rejoindre juste pour un simple dîner. C'est génial de pouvoir prendre le train pour rejoindre quelqu'un à l'autre bout du pays, comme on prendrait le métro ou le bus pour rejoindre un ami à l'autre bout de la ville. Le Pass Interrail change complètement la donne !

En fait, ce voyage en train a été très productif. Il m'a permis de terminer le troisième épisode de ma newsletter. Je dois dire qu'écrire dans un train est plutôt agréable. Même si parfois on se laisse surprendre par la beauté du paysage et que l'on se rend compte que l'on a arrêté d'écrire 30 minutes plus tard...

En arrivant à Florence, il pleuvait et mon oncle n'était pas encore prêt à me rencontrer. Je suis tombé sur le Palazzo Strozzi et j'ai visité l'exposition "Reaching the Stars" où j'ai pu admirer l'une des collections d'art contemporain les plus renommées au monde.

Plus de 70 œuvres d'artistes contemporains italiens et internationaux de premier plan, parmi lesquels Maurizio Cattelan, Cindy Sherman, Damien Hirst, Lara Favaretto, William Kentridge, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Sarah Lucas et Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, ont été exposées pour célébrer le 30e anniversaire de la collection Sandretto Re Rebaudengo.

Entre-temps, mon oncle m'avait chargé de trouver un restaurant de qualité en ville. Après quelques recherches en ligne, j'ai trouvé celui qui conviendrait : "La Antica Trattoria di Titto". Un restaurant très authentique, qui cochait la case la plus importante : une carte des vins plutôt bien fournie, un critère qui peut s'avérer décisif.

De retour à Genova

Après un retour à Gênes, nous avons pris la Vespa orange d'Antonella pour aller au marché faire des courses pour l'apéritif et le dîner qu'elle avait prévu avec des amis sur le rooftop de leur "appartemento". Elle m'a ensuite emmené à Boccadasse, un joli quartier en périphérie de Gênes, où je me suis promené pendant qu'elle s'occupait de ses affaires.

Le lendemain, en me promenant dans le centre-ville de Gênes, j'ai découvert que c'était la "Genova BeDesign Week", au cours de laquelle l'artisanat et le design sont mis à l'honneur. C'était pour moi l'occasion de rencontrer des entrepreneurs inspirants. À défaut de rencontrer des entrepreneurs inspirants proposant des solutions aux défis climatiques ou sociaux, j'ai découvert "La Sartoria Sociale EcoPoetica". Un espace géré par l'organisation à but non lucratif "Il Limone Lunare" dont l'équipe vise à inspirer et à développer la créativité en tant qu'action sociale d'un point de vue poétique, éthique et écologique.

L'association est en fait le point de contact local en Ligurie pour le "Centre Danilo Dolci pour le développement créatif" de Palerme, en Sicile. A travers l'organisation d'ateliers de maïeutique, ils suivent les traces du poète, sociologue et activiste non-violent.

Après quelques recherches à son propos, je compris que Danilo Dolci avait marqué des générations entières par son approche maïeutique. Aujourd'hui, l'espace Sartoria Sociale EcoPoetica est très actif dans le déploiement de différents types de projets, de formations et d'ateliers pour des groupes formels et informels dans les domaines de l'art, de l'écologie, de la pédagogie et de la guérison qui stimulent les talents et les idées des gens. La réciprocité de la communication entre les participants et les coordinateurs de l'atelier est l'une des pierres angulaires de l'atelier. Elle se fait par le dialogue, outil dialectique de la connaissance et de l'expérience partagée.

Rapallo et les Cinque Terre

En quittant la résidence d'Antonella et de Sergio, je me dirigeais non loin de Gênes chez sa mère, Adriana. Adriana vit à Rapallo et y gère un Bed and Breakfast avec l'aide de son petit-fils, Eugenio. À mon arrivée à la gare de Rapallo, Eugenio m'attendait. Il me conduit en voiture jusqu'à chez Adriana, où je fus une fois de plus chaleureusement accueilli.

Un petit détail de ce voyage cependant : le sol collant et l'odeur assez intense - mais plutôt délicate - près de mon siège dans le train. Alors que mon train arrivait sur le quai de Gênes, j'avais accidentellement laissé tomber un sac dans lequel se trouvait une petite bouteille en verre peinte à la main remplie de vinaigre de Modène 15 ans d'âge que j'avais acheté à un artiste de Venise. En ramassant le sac, je n'avais pas remarqué que la bouteille était cassée. Mais une fois à ma place, je pouvais voir le vinaigre s'écouler de mon sac... Comme la bouteille n'était pas complètement cassée, je l'ai gardée dans mon sac, dans la petite pochette en papier qu'on m'avait donnée lors de l'achat...

En arrivant chez Adriana, je lui racontai l'histoire et réussis à récupérer le reste du vinaigre qui restait et je le lui offris, en plus d'un très bon chocolat que j'avais acheté en Suisse. Elle était ravie. Même à 88 ans, elle se porte toujours à merveille ! Après ces retrouvailles, nous avons parlé de mon voyage, de mon séjour à Gênes, ainsi que de mon excentrique grand-mère. Elle en était très nostalgique. Enfin, elle a insisté pour que j'aille aux Cinque Terre. Il était évident que j'aurais dû prévoir d'y aller, mais je n'avais pas réalisé à quel point c'était proche...

Le lendemain, je pris le train de Rapallo à Riomaggiore, le village le plus au sud des Cinque Terre, et j'essayai de trouver le chemin pour commencer la randonnée. Il n'était pas bien indiqué et j'étais étonnamment le seul à commencer la randonnée à partir de là ce jour. En empruntant un sentier très raide, je commençai à monter et arrivai au bout d'une demi-heure à un point de la colline où je pouvais lire sur un panneau :

Vous marchez sur le sentier escarpé et pittoresque qui, jusqu'à la construction de la Via dell'Amore au début des années 1920, était la seule liaison entre les villages de Riomaggiore et de Manarola, séparés par des falaises abruptes tombant dans la mer. Le sentier traverse la Costa del Corniolo où l'on peut encore voir les champs en terrasses, avec leurs murs de pierres sèches et leurs plantations de vignes. Recommandé pour les excursionnistes experts.

Après avoir envoyé quelques photos et ce paragraphe à ma famille en ironisant sur le fait que j'étais apparemment un excursionniste expert, mon père m'a rapidement rappelé à l'ordre et m'a fait promettre d'être le plus prudent possible en me signalant qu'un touriste français serait mort récemment sur les sentiers des Cinque Terre, faute d'avoir été suffisamment précautionneux...

Bien sûr, la randonnée sur ces sentiers n'est pas une promenade de santé. Et la beauté environnante est telle qu'il serait facile pour quiconque de se laisser surprendre par un précipice. Mais d'après ce que j'ai pu constater, si vous êtes en forme et un minimum prudent, il n'y a pas lieu de se faire trop de soucis. Et si tu en doutes encore, tu devrais tenter l'expérience en personne un jour. De plus, si tu n'as pas envie de faire beaucoup de marche, tu peux toujours prendre le train et visiter chaque village un par un. Il ne faut alors que quelques minutes pour se rendre d'un village à l'autre.

Une heure après avoir atteint Manarolla, je me suis retrouvé dans un autre village, Volastra, où j'ai pu remplir ma gourde d'eau fraîche et acheter de la focaccia avant de poursuivre ma route. C'est là que je suis tombé sur deux jeunes Canadiens, Yugi et Darian, qui faisaient le tour de l'Italie. Nous avons alors poursuivi notre route séparément, mais nous nous sommes finalement retrouvés dans le village suivant, Corniglia. Là, nous avons déjeuné et bu un verre de vin local dans un bar situé dans les petites rues de Corniglia. Un peu plus loin, alors que j'avais fait un peu plus de route qu'eux, j'ai décidé de prendre le train à Vernazza pendant qu'ils continueraient leur route pour atteindre le dernier village le plus fréquenté des Cinque Terre, Monterosso. Après une rapide baignade, j'ai pris le train pour Rapallo où Eugenio m'attendait pour aller dîner dans un restaurant proposant un genre de tapas bien travaillés.

Le lendemain et dernier jour - j'avais prolongé mon séjour chez Adriana - elle me proposait de passer la journée ensemble pour que nous puissions prendre le ferry jusqu'à la magnifique abbaye de San Fruttuoso, un ensemble monastique situé sur le Golfo Paradiso, près de la ville de Camogli. Ce fut un voyage et une découverte très appréciables. En effet, sur notre route, nous nous sommes arrêtés rapidement à Porto Fino, un des plus beaux villages de la côte. De plus, l'emplacement de l'Abbaye est incroyable, et y accéder depuis la mer est surréaliste ! Nous avons ensuite pris un autre ferry - sur lequel nous étions les seuls passagers pendant un certain temps - et sommes allés à Camogli pour y déjeuner chez un fabricant de pâtes fraîches, "Pasta Fresca Fiorella".

Le même jour, je me rendais à Ferrare, en route pour Rome. J'y ai visité la vieille ville, son château, la cathédrale Saint-Georges et j'ai finalement déjeuné à "Al Brindisi - La Più Antica Osteria Del Mondo" - la plus ancienne taverne du monde - selon le Guinness World Records. Elle était déjà utilisée vers 1100 pour héberger et nourrir les ouvriers qui travaillaient à la construction de la cathédrale de Ferrare. À l'époque, l’endroit s'appelait "Hostaria del Chiuchiolino" (de "ciuc", ivre).

Le lendemain, samedi 1er juin, après une nuit au Foyer des étudiants de Ferrare, je me dirigeais enfin et infailliblement vers la capitale. Comme on dit...

Nous arrivons à la fin de cet épisode. J'aimerais en profiter pour remercier à nouveau Adriana, Antonella, Eugenio et Sergio pour leur accueil chaleureux et, bien sûr, vous remercier d'avoir lu !

Buongiorno from the Paradise, also kwon as San Vito Lo Cap in Sicily! That’s where I started to write this episode. I arrived (t)here on June 11^th for two nights and discovered such a lovely place, hostel, vibe, and people there… After two days there, one night train from Palermo to Naples, a train from Naples to Bari, and a ferry to reach Greece, I’m finally in Athens… But today, let me write you about my stay in Venice and about the highly interesting projects I discovered at the Biennial of Architecture 2023 Venice, already more than three weeks ago!

Introduction

Leaving Peschiera del Garda, I got on two regional trains and arrived in Venice Mestre in around two hours. As we all know, Venice is a city on water. But, one thing a lot of people might not really know about Venice is, that there is actually much more than this: For example, “Mestre” is part of Venice and is actually on the mainland, only eleven minutes away by train from what most people would actually call Venice, which is the main island of Venice. But if you look on a map, Venice actually includes multiple islands, in addition to some lands in Italy.

Of them all, I could only visit most of the main islands including Cannaregio, San Croce, San Polo, San Marco, and Castello (part of “the fish”) as well as Murano and Burano, two islands that are a bit further but that I highly recommend if you need some relaxing time away from the crowded touristic areas.

Arriving in Venice, I decided to leave the hostel and go for a first walk around the canals and I directly felt impressed and deeply touched by the supernatural aspect of the city, as if it could only exist in movies!

A quick reality check followed when I realised that, despite the beauty of the place, mass tourism and the large number of activities - shops, restaurants, etc. - that result of that leave very little room for the daily life of the locals. The most concrete example I saw was a former theatre where a supermarket has now taken up residence.

Now, Here, There.

One of my first relevant discoveries was the Romanian Pavilion, the cultural institute of Romania (the country), a generator of ideas, bringing to the fore the “creation journey” of innovations and inventions born only as a result of interdisciplinary collaboration.

As part of the Biennial of Venice, the space of the pavilion was presenting “Now, Here, There”.  An awarded project showcasing different innovative, yet unusual ideas, objects, and past/forgotten technological innovations as a source of inspiration for creating more enjoyable and resilient urban environments in the future.

The exhibition was allowing the visitors to explore and participate in this dialogue about the future through four research areas:

• Technical Innovations and Inventions

• 100 lateral pedagogies

• The Genetic Seed Bank

• The Co-Future Installation

“Now Here There” focuses on early 20th-century forgotten inventions that might open up the field of possibilities for future developments. As an activator of ideas, they are all representing a possible way of education through research, innovation, and social activation, these four research areas should be seen as new solutions to respond to a more people- and context-centered future.

Leaving the Romanian Pavilion, I was offered the book of the exhibition named “How’s the future guys?” in which can be found interesting resources about the 6 ingredients the curational team believes the future will be based on – “Power, Designed, Foods, Regenerations, Back to School and Community” – as well as the different lost innovations.

Regarding the current environmental challenges, one of the most interesting lost inventions is one from Henri Coandᾰ, a surprising seawater desalination system using solar energy! It was presented in the French magazine RADAR in January 1954. The article apparently wrote: “Henri Coandᾰ will disrupt the economy of desert regions.” Not to mention the whole process in detail, but basically the desalination is done by vaporizing the water. Quite an interesting solution knowing that the earth's surface is covered by 70% water with only 2,5% of it being actually drinkable water.

Although it is not the only seawater desalination system existing today, this invention would have had a huge positive impact on all deserted areas at that time, as well as on different other types of areas that did not have access to healthy drinkable water at that time.

Moreover, with the difficult current situation regarding water resources management in “developed” countries, this would be a huge help nowadays. But… The project was blocked because of “economic differences”. And today, might it be completely functional and ready to be launched, It seems quite certain that for some reason (money and interests?), it could take a while to have the necessary administrative and legal authorisations to enable it to be brought to market for the people and regions that need it. What a world we live in, right?

Time, Space, Existence.

During my journey, I regularly see the flag of Europe and when I do, I have to get a closer look at what is behind it. This time in Venice, the flag was actually hiding the Italian ECC – European Cultural Center – and its current exhibition for the Venice Biennial "Time Space Existence” 2023.

I entered and discovered the exhibited projects that investigate new technologies and construction methods that help reduce energy consumption through circular design and more sustainable building possibilities through innovative, organic, and/or recycled building materials.

The diversity of participants – architects, designers, artists, academics, and photographers – allow the exhibition to be quite eclectic. Projects also addressed social justice by presenting living solutions envisioned for displaced communities and minorities. Others were for example examining the tensions between the built urban environment and the nature surrounding it, identifying opportunities for coexistence.

Of the exhibited projects I discovered, here are some I really loved:

1. Essential Homes by The Norman Forster Foundation and Holcim - Born in June 2022 during the Shelters Workshop organised by the NFF, the project aims at an alternative approach of shelters. Given the actual permanent condition of most shelters’ settlements, they are trying to build easy-to-build houses rather than shelters, allowing the development of communities instead of camps. The project includes both a full-size “Essential Home” prototype, designed to bring safety, comfort, and well-being to displaced people due to wars or environmental catastrophises, which is displayed in the Giardini della Marinaressa on one hand, and the parallel exhibition at the Palazzo Mora including the whole historical context of temporary shelters structures and the development process of the Essential Home project with drawings, renderings, videos and more displays.

   

2. Smart Circular Bridge by Polynt - Currently under production, made out of unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) formulated with 60% renewable content – which could still be increased to 100% by using a material called “Bio Styrene” – this bridge concept is more environmentally friendly than regular concrete realisations. On top of that, it includes a sophisticated monitoring system that ensures not only a high level of safety for the users but also provides extensive information for the construction of further bridges.

3. Flow^TM the Third Challenge - by Gal Nauer Architecture & Design Studio

According to the curational team, this project is a call for architects and developers to lead this third challenge. It seems true that it is now time for architects to design and plan new forms of living habitats that fits the current challenges regarding climate change. Flow^TM now intends to put together a set of tools allowing solutions to adaptation.

In this context, they are for example planning Flow^TM01 “From Sea to Sea”, a very amazing and ambitious project located in the Great Rift Valley. This incredible desert site area is located at one of the lowest geographical points on earth, in a region that is greatly challenged by many situations such as dry arid weather, strong winds, sudden floods, and a constant rise of the temperature which actually create a lack of sustainability of the region.

Through a whole rearranging of the flow of water around the site, the architects behind Flow^TM01 are planning to create an artery of life in the valley, including the growth of vegetation and building new living habitats, using the palette of adaptation solutions. Unbelievable, isn’t it?

Le Tracé Bleu – The Blue Route.

On my way to Palazzo Bembo, to see the rest of the projects part of “Time, Space, Existence” I came across a place where a few French words were written on the walls and therefore attracted my curiosity

Le Tracé Bleu – in English The Bleu Route – is a project led by the French Architecturestudio agency. Currently exhibited during the Biennial of Architecture 2023 in their laboratory in Venice – the CA’ASI, a space dedicated to promoting dialogue around contemporary art and architecture hosted in the Palazzo Santa Maria Nova – Le Tracé Bleu will also be presented from 2024 January 26th to March 10th in Le Cent Quatre, in Paris, an artistic institution of the City of Lights. I highly recommend everyone who is in Paris during that time to go there and give it a try!

But what is exactly Le Tracé Bleu? Part of the collateral exhibitions of the Biennale, this project actually aims at reorientating thinking about inhabited environments in light of the climate emergency.

The exhibition started with the projection of “Slow Violence”. The film by Joanie Lemercier presents images of the biggest machine ever constructed by humans. The Bagger 290 of RWE company is an excavating machine that can extract up to 240 000 tons of coal each day. Counting the emissions of the four electric centrals that are running on the site, 155,000 tons of CO₂ are released each day there. According to the data in the book of the exhibition I bought, it makes it the most important source of greenhouse gases in Europe, responsible for 480,000 tons of CO₂ emissions.

When it comes to the video itself, the rhythm of the images is pretty slow. As the process of ecological destruction is. Indeed, around 40 years are required for greenhouse gas emissions to actually impact our earth's atmosphere making it pretty hard to interpret and understand the impact of our activities. Hence the film's title, "Slow Violence". An expression first used by Princeton University professor Rob Nixon to describe the process of climate change.

Another video of the same kind was displayed in a second room, showing fishermen from a village on the Northeast coast of Brazil who enact a ritual of embracing the fish that they have caught before killing them. The film evokes both the one-to-one relationship between humans and non-humans that are characteristic of animism – the belief that objects, places, and creatures all possess a distinct spiritual essence – and the violence disguised as kindness within a system of domination in which humans reign supreme.

The rest of the exhibition presents a multitude of pieces of urban and architectural projects realized or imagined by the Architecturestudio agency, that reveal the possible uses of available resources and helps us understand that architecture is indeed quite an important aspect of our lives because it has the power to determine the way we inhabit our environment, the way we interact with nature, the way we move, the food we eat… Cities and therefore architecture is a big deal. 

From an architectural point of view, the difficult questions that the exhibition brings up to us call for the definition of responsible action, both from the point of view of the localized act of building (or renovating) as well as its implications on both economic, political, and ecological levels. The result of the exhibition is quite relevant and provides us with a better understanding of the complexity of the challenges and the importance of the spatial relationships between agricultural and urban areas.

Two major hypotheses resulting from this work are that since the resource of space is no longer to be found in EXtension – now impossible – but in INtention, the support for our human installations - the ground - is currently our most precious asset. Since the resource of time is no longer conceivable in the inertia of linearity but in movement, repetition, and recommencement, the cycle is our new standard. Space and time, ground and recommencement. For a reasoned use of the resources of tomorrow's project.

The soil, as a precondition for any installation, has always been synonymous with fertility and nourishment. It is humanity's primary condition of existence. Traditionally, architecture has been more concerned with visible, urban, architectural places of consumption than with rural or industrial places of production, which are often isolated and not very visible.

Nowadays, however, this functional approach is revealing new areas to be explored as new territories for projects. The question of a better distribution of the soil, as the primary resource for any possible settlement, is fundamental to the Tracé Bleu. Today, architecture and town planning have a major responsibility to design strategies for a balanced coexistence between the three territories: agricultural, urban, and natural. And this can only be achieved over the long term as the land regenerates. Once again, the notion of common is central here.

A few friends of mine have been hard working for months in order to (re)create Eho!Transition, a catalyst, a school to allow YOU to experiment, resource yourself and gain more confidence in order for participants to launch their own projects and to realise their dreams.

This year, for the second time, they are organising this immersive experience to find out more about yourself while traveling around France. The real idea behind it is to get out of your comfort zone and experiment with another lifestyle for 9 days.

« Buongiorno » du paradis, aussi connu sous le nom de San Vito Lo Cap en Sicile. Lieu magique où j’ai séjourné et où j’ai débuté la rédaction de ce nouvel épisode de mon infolettre. San Vito se situe à quelques heures à l’ouest de Palerme en bus sur un cap(o).. Je suis arrivé le 11 juin et n’y ai séjourné que deux nuits. Néanmoins, cela m’a permis de découvrir un endroit magique, une auberge emplie d’une myriade de gens formidables et surtout, d’une atmosphère particulièrement relaxante.

Après ces deux jours idylliques sur place, il était déjà l’heure pour moi de reaprtir et d’embarquer pour un loooong voyage : J’ai tout d’abord pris un premier bus pour rejoindre Palerme, puis un train de nuit pour rejoindre l’Italie. Je me suis accordé une nuit de « repos » à Naples puis j’ai à nouveau pris un train pour Bari. Après une nuit passée dans un ferry pour rejoindre Patras en Grèce, j’ai partagé un taxi depuis le terminal de ferry de Patras avec un couple de retraités pour rejoindre le centre et j’ai pu prendre le bus final pour rejoindre Athènes. Mais revenons en Italie un moment, je dois vous parler de mon séjour à Venise et des projets que j’y ai découvert en marge de la Biennale d’Architecture 2023, il y a déjà un peu plus de trois semaines…

Introduction

En partant de Peschiera del Garda sur les bords du lac de Garde, j’ai rejoint Venice Mestre en un peu moins de deux heures. Comme nous le savons tous, Venise est une ville sur l’eau. Mais une chose que beaucoup de gens ne savent pas, c’est que c’est bien plus que ça ! Par exemple, « Mestre » qui fait partie de Venise est en réalité sur la terre ferme en Italie et se situe à seulement 11 minutes de train de ce que la majorité d’entre nous appellerait Venice, à savoir l’île principale. Si l’on jette un coup d’œil à une carte, Venise inclue de multiples îles en plus de territoires sur la terre ferme.

Bien sûr, en seulement 4 jours, je n’ai pas pu tout visiter mais j’ai tout de même eu l’occasion d’aller dans les quartiers principaux de Cannaregio, San Croce, San Polo, San Marco et Castello et ai également pu visiter Murano et Burano, deux îles situées un peu plus à l’écart et que je recommande vivement si l’on souhaite s’échapper de l’atmosphère parfois pesante des quartiers touristiques les plus fréquentés.

Arrivé à Venise, je décide de quitter mon auberge (à Mestre) pour me rendre dans le centre historique de Venise. Très vite, je ressens cette sensation étrange liée au caractère assez fantastique de la ville, comme si elle n’existait que dans les films.

Un retour à la réalité s’est imposé de lui même assez rapidement quand je réalise que malgré la beauté du lieu, le tourisme de masse et l’importance des activités – boutiques, restaurants etc. – qui en découlent laissent assez peu de place pour la vie quotidienne des locaux. L’exemple le plus concret que j’ai pu constater est un ancien théâtre où une enseigne de supermarché a désormais élu domicile.

Now, Here, There.

Une de mes premières découvertes pertinentes est l’institut culturel de la Roumanie, une sorte de générateur d’idées qui met en avant les processus de création d’innovations et d’inventions résultant de collaboration interdisciplinaire.

L’espace du Pavillon Roumain présentait « Now, Here, There », une exposition collatérale à la Biennale d’Architecture 2023 qui présente différentes idées, objets ou inventions oubliées, innovatives et inhabituelles, pouvant servir de source d’inspiration pour la création dans le futur d’environnements urbains plus agréable et plus résilients face aux défis qui se posent à nous aujourd’hui.

L'exposition invitait les visiteurs à explorer et à participer à cette réflexion sur l'avenir à travers quatre domaines de recherche :

• Innovations techniques et inventions

• 100 pédagogies latérales

• La banque de semences génétiques

• L'installation Co-Future

L'exposition se consacrait aux inventions oubliées du début du 20e siècle qui pourraient offrir des perspectives de développement pour l'avenir. En quittant le pavillon roumain, on m'a offert le livre de l'exposition intitulé “How’s the future guys?”, dans lequel on peut trouver des ressources intéressantes sur les six ingrédients sur lesquels l'équipe curative pense que l'avenir sera basé - "Power, Designed, Foods, Regenerations, Back to School and Community" - ainsi que sur les différentes innovations perdues.

L'une des inventions perdues les plus intéressantes, au regard des défis environnementaux actuels, est celle d'Henri Coandᾰ, un surprenant système de désalinisation de l'eau de mer à l'aide de l'énergie solaire ! Elle a été présentée dans le magazine français RADAR en janvier 1954. L'article aurait écrit : "Henri Coandᾰ va bouleverser l'économie des régions désertiques". Sans parler de tout le processus en détail, on peut dire que la désalinisation se fait en vaporisant l'eau. Une solution plus que pertinente quand on sait que la surface de la terre est recouverte à 70 % d'eau, dont seulement 2,5 % d'eau potable.

Bien qu'il ne s'agisse pas du seul système de désalinisation de l'eau de mer existant aujourd'hui, cette invention aurait eu à l'époque un impact positif énorme sur toutes les zones désertiques, ainsi que sur différents autres types de zones qui n'avaient pas accès à une eau potable saine à l'époque. De plus, compte tenu de la situation actuelle difficile en matière de gestion des ressources en eau dans les pays "développés", cette invention serait d’une grande aide aujourd’hui. Mais... Le projet a été bloqué à l’époque en raison de "différences économiques". Comment serait le monde à l'heure actuelle si ce type d'invention avait réellement vu le jour ? On est en droit de se le demander…

Aujourd'hui, bien qu’il soit complètement fonctionnel et prêt à être lancé, il apparaît évident que pour une raison ou une autre (argent et intérêts ?), il faudra probablement attendre un certain temps avant d'obtenir les autorisations administratives et légales nécessaires à sa mise sur le marché pour les personnes et les régions qui en ont besoin. Dans quel monde vivons-nous, n'est-ce pas ?

Time, Space, Existence.

Au cours de mon voyage, je vois régulièrement le drapeau de l'Europe et quand cela m'arrive, je vais voir de plus près ce qui se cache derrière. Cette fois-ci, à Venise, le drapeau cachait en fait le CCE italien - Centre Culturel Européen - et son exposition actuelle en marge de la Biennale de Venise "Time Space Existence" 2023.

J'y ai découvert des projets qui étudient de nouvelles technologies et méthodes de construction permettant de réduire la consommation d'énergie grâce à une conception "circulaire" ainsi qu’à des possibilités de construction plus durables incluant des matériaux de construction innovants, organiques et/ou recyclés.

La diversité des participants - architectes, designers, artistes, universitaires et photographes - permet à l'exposition d'être très éclectique. Les projets présentés abordent également la question de la justice sociale en présentant des solutions de vie envisagées pour les communautés déplacées et les minorités. D'autres examinent également les tensions entre l'environnement urbain construit et la nature qui l'entoure, en identifiant de possibles coexistences.

Parmi les projets exposés que j'ai partiuclièrement apprecié, en voici quelques-uns:  

1.      “Essential Homes” par The Norman Forster Foundation et Holcim - Né en juin 2022 lors de l'atelier sur la thématiques des abris pour personnes déplacées organisé par le NFF, le projet vise à proposer une approche alternative des abris. Compte tenu de l'aspect "permanent" de la majorité des abris, le projet vise à construire des maisons faciles à réaliser plutôt que des abris, permettant ainsi le développement de communautés plutôt que de camps. Le projet comprend à la fois un prototype grandeur nature de "maison essentielle", conçu pour apporter sécurité, confort et bien-être aux personnes déplacées en raison de guerres ou de catastrophes environnementales, exposé dans les Giardinni della Marinaressa d'une part, et l'exposition parallèle au Palazzo Mora qui comprend tout le contexte historique des structures d'abris temporaires et le processus de développement du projet "maison essentielle" avec des dessins, des projections, des vidéos et bien plus encore.

2.   Smart Circular Bridge par Polynt”- Actuellement en cours de production, fabriqué en résine polyester insaturée (UPR) formulée avec un contenu renouvelable de 60 % - qui pourrait encore être porté à 100 % en utilisant un matériau appelé "Bio Styrène" - ce concept présente un pont plus respectueux de l'environnement que les réalisations en béton habituelles. Par ailleurs, il comprend un système de surveillance sophistiqué qui garantit non seulement un niveau élevé de sécurité pour les utilisateurs, mais fournit également des informations détaillées pour la construction de futurs ponts.

3.      “Flow^TM the Third Challenge” - par Gal Nauer Architecture & Design Studio

Selon l'équipe curatrice du projet, il s'agit en fait d'un appel adressé aux architectes et aux promoteurs pour qu'ils prennent les devants et relèvent ce troisième défi. Il est en effet temps pour les architectes de concevoir et de planifier de nouvelles formes d'habitats vivants qui répondent aux défis actuels liés aux changements climatiques. Flow^TM entend désormais mettre en place un ensemble d'outils permettant de trouver des solutions d'adaptation.

Parralèlement, ils sont en train de planifier leur première action, Flow01, un projet très étonnant et ambitieux situé dans la vallée du Grand Rift. Ce site désertique incroyable est situé à l'un des points géographiques les plus bas de la planète, dans une région qui doit faire face à de nombreuses situations telles qu'un temps sec et aride, des vents violents, des inondations soudaines, ainsi qu"une augmentation constante de la température, qui créent en fait un manque de durabilité de la région.

En réorganisant entièrement l'écoulement de l'eau autour du site, les architectes de Flow01 prévoient de créer une artère de vie dans la vallée, y compris la croissance de la végétation et la construction de nouveaux habitats vivants, en utilisant la palette des solutions d'adaptation. Incroyable, non ?

Le Tracé Bleu.

En me rendant au Palazzo Bembo, pour voir les autres projets de l'exposition "Time, Space, Existence", ma curiosité a été attirée par quelques mots français écrits sur les murs.

Le « Tracé Bleu » est un projet mené par l'agence française Architecturestudio au sein de leur laboratoire à Venise, le CA'ASI - un espace dédié à la promotion du dialogue autour de l'art contemporain et de l'architecture situé dans le Palazzo Santa Maria Nova.

Cette exposition sera également présenté du 26 janvier au 10 mars 2024 au Cent Quatre, à Paris, une institution artistique de la Ville Lumière. Je recommande vivement à tous ceux qui se trouvent à Paris pendant cette période de s'y rendre et de tenter l'expérience !

Mais qu'est-ce que donc que ce « Tracé Bleu » ? Cette exposition collatérale à la Biennale propose une réflexion sur les environnements habités à la lumière de l'urgence climatique.

L'exposition débute par le visionnage de "Slow Violence". Un film de Joanie Lemercier, présentant des images de la plus grande machine jamais construite par l'homme. Le Bagger 290 de la société RWE. Une excavatrice qui peut extraire jusqu'à 240 000 tonnes de charbon par jour. En comptant les émissions des quatre centrales électriques qui tournent sur le site, 155 000 tonnes de CO2 sont rejetées chaque jour sur place. Selon les données du livre de l'exposition que j'ai acheté, cela en fait la plus importante source de gaz à effet de serre en Europe, responsable de 480 000 tonnes d'émissions de CO2.

En ce qui concerne la vidéo elle-même, le rythme des images est assez lent. Tout comme le processus de destruction écologique. En effet, il faut environ 40 ans pour que les émissions de gaz à effet de serre aient un impact sur l'atmosphère terrestre, ce qui rend difficile l'interprétation et la compréhension de l'impact de nos activités. D'où le nom "Slow violence", une expression utilisée pour la première fois par Rob Nixon, professeur à la Princeton University, pour évoquer le processus de changement climatique.

Une autre vidéo était projetée dans une deuxième salle, montrant des pêcheurs d'un village de la côte nord-est du Brésil qui pratiquent un rituel consistant à embrasser les poissons qu'ils ont attrapés avant de les tuer. Le film évoque à la fois la relation univoque entre humains et non-humains, caractéristique de l'animisme - la croyance selon laquelle les objets, les lieux et les créatures possèdent tous une essence spirituelle distincte - et la violence déguisée en gentillesse au sein d'un système de domination dans lequel les humains règnent en maîtres.

Après ces deux vidéos saisissantes, le reste de l'exposition présente une multitude de projets urbains et architecturaux réalisés ou imaginés par l'agence Architecturestudio, qui témoignent d'une autre utilisation possible des ressources disponibles et nous permet de comprendre que l'architecture est un aspect très important de notre vie, car elle a le pouvoir de déterminer la façon dont nous habitons notre environnement, la façon dont nous interagissons avec la nature, la façon dont nous nous déplaçons, la nourriture que nous consommons. Les villes et, par conséquent leur architecture constitue un enjeu important.

D'un point de vue architectural, les questions assez difficiles soulevées par l'exposition appellent à la définition d'une action responsable, tant du point de vue de l'acte localisé de construction (ou de rénovation) que de ses implications aux niveaux économique, politique et écologique. Le résultat de l'exposition est fort réussi et nous permet de mieux comprendre la complexité des enjeux et l'importance des relations spatiales entre les espaces agricoles et urbains.

Deux hypothèses majeures résultent de ce travail : puisque la ressource de l'espace ne se trouve plus dans l'EXtension - désormais impossible - mais dans l'INtention, le support de nos installations humaines, c'est-à-dire le sol, est aujourd'hui notre bien le plus précieux. Puisque la ressource du temps ne se conçoit plus dans l'inertie de la linéarité mais dans le mouvement, la répétition et le recommencement, le cycle est notre nouvelle norme. L'espace et le temps, le sol et le recommencement. Pour une utilisation raisonnée des ressources du projet de demain.

Le sol étant une condition préalable à toute forme d'installation a été de tout temps synonyme de fertilité et de nourriture. C'est la condition première de l'existence de l'humanité. Traditionnellement, l'architecture s'est davantage intéressée aux lieux de consommation architecturaux, urbains et visibles qu'aux lieux de production ruraux ou industriels, souvent isolés et peu visibles. Mais aujourd'hui, cette approche fonctionnelle révèle de nouveaux domaines à explorer comme autant de nouveaux territoires de projets. La question d'une meilleure répartition du sol, ressource première de toute implantation, est fondamentale pour le Tracé Bleu. Aujourd'hui, l'architecture et l'urbanisme ont une responsabilité majeure dans la conception de stratégies pour une coexistence équilibrée entre les trois territoires : agricole, urbain et naturel. Et cela ne peut se faire que sur le long terme, au fur et à mesure que le territoire se régénère. Là encore, la notion de commun est centrale.

TRANSITION EXPRESS

Aucune transition vers “Transition Express”. Qu’est-ce que je raconte ? Vous ne pourrez réellement le savoir si et seulement si vous prenez part à cette incroyable expérience !

Depuis quelques temps déjà, des amies à moi travaillent dur pour (re)structurer un projet nommé Eho!Transition, un catalyseur, une école qui permet à toutes et tous d’expérimenter, de se ressourcer et de prendre confiance dans leur propres capacités en vue de réaliser leur propres rêves et projets divers.

Cette année pour la seconde fois, elles organisent à nouveau cette expérience immersive permettant de sortir de sa zone de confort, d’en découvrir plus sur soi et d’expérimenter un nouveau mode et rythme de vie durant 9 jours. Le tout, au départ d’un écolieu vers un autre, en stop et sans ressources.

Introduction

Before telling you about my very interesting last discoveries during the Architecture Biennale of Venice 2023 as promised in my last episode, let me write a few words about some amazing places, hikes, and people I’ve discovered, experienced, or met between Innsbrück and Venice. I already wrote about the Montagu BedxBeers because it is a very interesting place but I did not write much about my experience there. Since then, I visited Zurich, Lugano, Como, Milano, Pescheria del Garda, Verone, Venezia, Genova, Rapallo, Ferrara, and Roma. It might be too long to tell you all about it in this single episode. That is why I called it 4.1.

In Innsbrück, I had the chance to experience both an awesome jazz concert in the basement of the Villa Communista/Montagu Hostel my first night there and an incredible hike reaching almost the summit of Innsbrück, the amazing “Seegrübe” viewpoint the day after. A quite steep three-hour hike going from 865 meters high up to 1905 meters high. I must admit … When James – pronounced “dʒeɪmiz”‎ – told me during the jazz concert that she and a bunch of other solo travelers were planning to leave early in the morning for a hike, I was not completely convinced… yet!

In the end, even after a quite short night, I was fine in the early morning and happy to go through some nature! Still, Diane, Alex, Sanj, James, Kiki and I were probably not expecting such a hike. But as a team, we managed to reach the top, helping each other go through this challenging time!

The fog, the stiffness of the path, and globally the difficulty of the exercise were not anticipated and were quite ambitious. But what a pride arriving there! And also, after the sun came up and the clouds were gone, what a view… I was literally out of breath!

After this great experience shared with such a lovely team in Innsbruck, it was almost heartbreaking to say goodbye. But, of us all, none were heading in the same direction. And moreover, even if one might think one will never meet such a great team again, it is true only till the next team. Anyways, the time had come for me to leave Innsbrück and the team and return to my solo travel!

Switzerland was indeed awaiting! My wallet was not that enthusiastic though. Indeed, everything from the accommodations to (even fast) food is quite expensive there. But still, Switzerland is beautiful and can also be worthwhile - if you have money to spend.

In Zurich, apart from a quick tour of the city, an exhibition about illusions, and a visit to the “Genesis” car brand pop-up store, I could not do much more there.

For the majority of us who do not know Genesis: It is the Hyundai Luxury Brand that is supposed to be pursuing an electrification and carbon net zero goal. Chief Executive Officer, Jay Chang stated that from 2025, all new Genesis vehicles to be launched will be pure electric vehicles. By 2030, Genesis aimed to establish itself as a 100% zero-emission vehicle brand. In addition, they do intend to innovate the entire value chain, pursuing carbon net zero by 2035. It is indeed a relevant mission, given the considerable weight of fossil fuels required by combustion cars…

However, when you take a closer look at the impact of the rare metals required for the production of batteries for electric vehicles, I'm still not completely won over by this 'solution'. Not to mention the current “hydrogen” methods that are for the moment not sustainable either. Still, it was an intriguing visit and discovery.

One regret about my stay in Zurich is that I could not manage correctly my time for a visit to the Beyer Museum of Watchmaking. From what I’ve read, it includes one of the most interesting private collections of all-around-the-world time-measuring instruments such as sundials, oil clocks, hourglasses, clepsydra, floor and table clocks, pocket watches, wristwatches, clocks from various periods.

From Zurich, I went for one additional night in Switzerland around the Lake of Lugano. It was quite cloudy but still a good surprise and there, I could also reach the very peak and panoramic point of Monte S. Salvatore (912meters high) with its amazing view of most of the lake of Lugano including an Italian enclave in Swiss territory, the so-called “Campione d’Italia”.

I then hopped on the train to reach Como Lake in less than half an hour. I was finally in Italy and had to celebrate this with a classic but very pleasant Italian dinner starting with an Al dente pasta al Pomodoro followed by a Pizza con Carciofe at a restaurant suggested by a local.

The next day, I took a funicular in the village of Brunate and went up for another 30-minute walk to reach the panoramic point of view from the Lighthouse of Volta. A memorial place in honor of Alessandro Volta, pioneer of electricity, whose name is used today in common language in memory of his work.

From Como, it then took me one hour to the biggest hub of Northern Italy… Milano!

I had already been to Milano twice but still, I really enjoyed this stay. From my hostel to the cultural sites, restaurants, and gelateria I went to, everything was perfect!

The location of the QUO Hostel was quite central (10 minutes walk from the Duomo) and the staff was very friendly. When I arrived at the reception desk, I had mixed up the dates of my booking. I had actually booked for the following night and the hostel was supposedly full. Nevertheless, after a few minutes of discussion, the team made an exception for me as it was already a bit late and gave me the extra bed they had for "emergency" situations.

The day after, I finally got my regular bed for 2 additional nights and was then able to go for a deeper exploration of the city. I visited the beautiful church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, next to the Last Supper Museum but I was not able to see the famous painting because tickets were already sold out for the next three months!!!

I went to the amazing Nuovecento Museum (Museum of the 19^th century Art Courants) and the Museum of Leonardo da Vinci which goes through all his work and inventions and where you can also admire a reproduction (twice smaller) of the Last Supper painting.

About innovative/social projects, I ran across a very intriguing and non-conventional place, the “Temple of the Lost Future”. I had to stop and knock on the door to learn more about it. I was offered a visit and discovered this amazing place that is today a multifunctional cultural center as well as a place of sharing and solidarity, experimentation, and artistic research.

The people behind this social project have given new life to an abandoned building. The occupation was not very legal in the first place but after years of administrative battle, it is now well established and participates in an urban regeneration project. It provides today a new physical and spiritual space dedicated to independent creativity for people under 35 years old. As I understood it from the visit, it really has this multidisciplinary and multi-purpose particularity.

There, you can find an exhibition space and venue for cultural exhibitions and events, but also a center for music production, dance, theatre, yoga, meditation, and self-defense.

The “if you don't need it, leave it, if you need to take it” motto is also helping a lot of people to be able to pick up second-hand clothes for free hung outside the place on the “Wall of Kindness” but also read books and express themselves inside. Since the beginning, organisers have collected more than 10,000 items of clothing and made 7,500 books available.

Leaving Milano, I went to Peschiera del Garda on the Garda Lake and met again lovely people with whom I had a nice day biking around the lake.

Also, the staff of the “Meet Hostel” there was very friendly, and globally the hostel itself was very pleasant. A pool table was in the very center of the common area, making it easier to connect with people, and they would organise every evening a so-called “social dinner” including a big plate of pasta and a glass of wine for 8€. The perfect occasion to talk to people you had not met yet.

Finally, I had the opportunity to quickly meet Silvia (the owner) and thank her and her team for the good vibes this place was providing and moreover for the very useful guide including activities, best tips, and addresses for travelers in order to enjoy their stay as much as possible that they had created! Something similar to the “USE-IT” maps but in a different format.

Before heading to Venice, I visited Verona for one day. Verona has a lot of history to tell. It is for example the city that saw the love and death of Romeo and Juliet, and also the city with the eighth-biggest amphitheater in the Roman Empire that also predates the Colosseum in Rome! I really advise the visit. It is definitely worth it!

Pour le moment, c'est tout ce que je sais dire. Et c'est assez. Pour le moment !

Introduction

Avant de te raconter mes récentes découvertes à la Biennale d'architecture de Venise 2023, comme promis dans mon dernier épisode, laisse-moi te parler de quelques lieux, randonnées et rencontres incroyables que j'ai pu faire entre Innsbrück et Venise. J'ai déjà mentionné le Montagu BedxBeers parce que c'est un endroit très intéressant, mais je n'ai pas écrit grand-chose sur mon expérience à Innsbrück. Depuis, j'ai visité Zurich, Lugano, Côme, Milan, Pescheria del Garda, Verone, Venise, Gênes, Rapallo, Ferrare et Rome. Cela risque d'être trop long pour tout vous raconter dans ce seul épisode. C'est pourquoi je l'ai appelé 4.1.

À Innsbrück, j'ai eu la chance de profiter d'un concert de jazz exceptionnel dans le sous-sol de l'auberge Villa Communista/Montagu lors de ma première soirée et de faire une randonnée incroyable jusqu'au sommet d'Innsbrück, l'incroyable point de vue "Seegrübe", le lendemain matin. Une randonnée de trois heures assez raide, passant de 865 mètres d'altitude à 1905 mètres d'altitude. Je dois admettre que lorsque James - prononcez "dʒeɪmiz" - m'a dit pendant le concert de jazz qu'elle et un groupe d'autres solo-travellers prévoyaient de partir tôt le matin pour une randonnée, je n'étais pas tout à fait convaincu. Et pourtant...

Finalement, même après une nuit assez courte, je me sentais bien au petit matin et j'étais ravi de pouvoir profiter d'un peu de nature ! Diane, Alex, Sanj, James, Kiki et moi-même ne nous attendions probablement pas à une telle randonnée. Mais ensemble, nous avons réussi à atteindre le sommet, en nous aidant les uns les autres à surmonter cette épreuve !

Le brouillard, la raideur du chemin, et globalement la difficulté de l'exercice n'étaient pas prévus et furent quelque peu ambitieux. Mais quelle joie et fierté en arrivant là-haut ! Et surtout, une fois le soleil levé et les nuages dissipés, quelle vue... J'étais littéralement sans voix!

Après cette grande expérience partagée avec une équipe si sympathique à Innsbruck, c'était presque un crève-cœur de se quitter. Mais, de nous tous, aucun n'allait dans la même direction. Et puis, même si l'on peut penser que l'on ne retrouvera jamais une équipe aussi formidable, ce n'est vrai que jusqu'à la suivante. Quoi qu'il en soit, le temps était venu pour moi de quitter Innsbrück et cette équipe et de retourner à mon voyage en solitaire !

La Suisse m'attendait en effet ! Cependant, mon portefeuille n'était pas aussi enthousiaste. En effet, de l'hébergement à la cuisine (même rapide), tout paraît relativement cher en Suisse. Mais ce pays en vaut de tout même la peine, pour peu que l'on ait de l'argent à dépenser.

A Zurich, à part une rapide visite de la ville, une exposition sur les illusions et une visite au pop-up store de la marque automobile "Genesis", je n'ai pas pu faire grand-chose de plus.

Pour la majorité d'entre nous qui ne connaissent pas Genesis : Il s'agit de la marque de luxe de Hyundai qui est censée tendre vers un objectif d'électrification et de neutralité carbone. Le PDG, Jay Chang, a déclaré qu'à partir de 2025, tous les nouveaux véhicules Genesis qui seront lancés seront des véhicules purement électriques. D'ici à 2030, Genesis entend s'imposer comme une marque de véhicules à 100 % zéro émission. En outre, la société a l'intention d'innover sur l'ensemble de la chaîne de valeur, afin d'atteindre l'objectif de neutralité carbone d'ici à 2035. Il s'agit d'une mission pertinente, étant donné le poids considérable des combustibles fossiles requis par les voitures à combustion...

Cependant, quand on observe de plus près l'impact des métaux rares requis pour la production des batteries des véhicules électriques, je ne suis pas encore tout à fait convaincu par cette "solution". Sans parler des méthodes actuelles de production d'hydrogène qui, pour l'instant, ne sont pas non plus durables. Malgré tout, ce fut une visite et une découverte intrigante.

Un regret de mon séjour à Zurich est que je n'ai pas pu consacrer correctement mon temps à la visite du Musée de l'horlogerie Beyer. D'après ce que j'ai lu, il comprend l'une des plus intéressantes collections privées d'instruments de mesure du temps du monde entier, tels que des cadrans solaires, des horloges à huile, des sabliers, des clepsydres, des horloges de sol et de table, des montres de poche, des montres-bracelets et des pendules de différentes époques.

Je risque d'en perdre certains mais si tu as deux minutes pour rigoler, je recommande vivement cette vidéo qui explique pourquoi les gens achètent des montres suisses très coûteuses. Sinon, continue la lecture ! 😉

Depuis Zurich, je suis allé passer une nuit supplémentaire en Suisse autour du lac de Lugano. Le temps était assez nuageux mais ce fut tout de même une belle découverte. J'ai également pu atteindre le sommet et le point panoramique du Monte S. Salvatore (912 mètres d'altitude), qui offre une vue imprenable sur la majeure partie du lac de Lugano, y compris une enclave italienne en territoire suisse, le "Campione d'Italia".

J'ai ensuite sauté dans le train pour atteindre le lac de Côme en moins d'une demi-heure. J'étais enfin en Italie et je devais fêter cela avec un dîner italien classique mais très agréable, en commençant par des pâtes Al dente al Pomodoro suivies d'une Pizza con Carciofe dans un restaurant qui m’avait été recommandé par un local.

Le lendemain, je pris un funiculaire dans le village de Brunate et fis encore 30 minutes de marche pour atteindre le point de vue panoramique du Phare de Volta. Un lieu de mémoire en l'honneur d'Alessandro Volta, pionnier de l'électricité, dont le nom est aujourd'hui utilisé dans le langage courant en souvenir de l'utilité de son œuvre.

Depuis Côme, il ne me fallu qu’une heure pour rejoindre le plus grand centre de l'Italie du Nord... Milan !

J'y étais déjà allé deux fois, mais j'ai quand même beaucoup apprécié ce séjour. De mon auberge de jeunesse aux sites culturels, restaurants et gelateria que j'ai visités, tout m’a semblé parfait !

L'emplacement de l'auberge QUO était assez central (à 10 minutes à pied du Duomo) et le personnel très sympathique. A mon arrivée à la réception, je réalisais que je m'étais emmelé les pinceaux dans les dates de ma réservation. J'avais en fait réservé pour la nuit suivante et l'auberge était censée être complète. Néanmoins, après quelques minutes de discussion, l'équipe fit une exception pour moi car il était déjà un peu tard et on me donna le lit supplémentaire qu'ils avaient pour les situations "d'urgence".

Le jour suivant, j'obtins enfin mon lit prévu pour deux nuits supplémentaires et pus alors explorer la ville plus en profondeur. Je pus alors visiter la magnifique église Santa Maria delle Grazie, à côté du musée de la Cène, mais ne pus pas admirer la célèbre peinture car les billets étaient déjà vendus pour les trois mois à venir !!! 😱

En revanche, je me suis consolé avec l'étonnant musée Nuovecento (musée des Courants d'art du 19e siècle) et avec le musée Léonard de Vinci, qui retrace l'ensemble de son œuvre et de ses inventions et dans lequel on peut également admirer une reproduction (deux fois plus petite) de la peinture de la Cène.

En ce qui concerne les projets innovants/sociaux, je suis tombé sur un endroit très intrigant et plutôt alternatif, le "Temple de l'avenir perdu". Il fallait que je m'arrête et que je frappe à la porte pour en savoir plus! On me proposa une visite et je fis alors la découverte d'un lieu étonnant qui est aujourd'hui un centre culturel multifonctionnel ainsi qu'un lieu de partage et de solidarité, d'expérimentation et de recherche artistique.

Les personnes à l'origine de ce projet social ont donné une nouvelle vie à ce bâtiment laissé à l'abandon. L'occupation du lieu n'était pas très légale au départ, mais après des années de bataille administrative, le lieu est désormais bien établi et fait partie d'un projet de régénération urbaine. Le centre offre aujourd'hui un nouvel espace physique et spirituel dédié à la créativité indépendante pour les personnes de moins de 35 ans. D'après ce que j'ai compris de la visite, il a vraiment cette particularité multidisciplinaire et polyvalente.

On y trouve un espace d'exposition et un lieu pour des expositions et des événements culturels, mais aussi un centre de production musicale, de danse, de théâtre, de yoga, de méditation et d'autodéfense.

La devise "si vous n'en avez pas besoin, laissez-le, si vous en avez besoin, prenez-le" permet également à de nombreuses personnes de récupérer gratuitement des vêtements de seconde main accrochés à l'extérieur du lieu sur le "Mur de la Générosité", mais aussi de lire des livres et de s'exprimer à l'intérieur. Depuis le début, l'association a collecté plus de 10 000 vêtements et mis à disposition 7 500 livres.

En quittant Milan, je me suis rendue à Peschiera del Garda, sur le lac de Garde, et j'ai rencontré à nouveau des gens charmants avec qui j'ai passé une belle journée à faire du vélo autour du lac.

De plus, le staff de l'auberge "Meet Hostel" était très sympathique et, globalement, l'auberge elle-même était très accueillante. Une table de billard se trouvait au centre de l'espace commun, ce qui facilitait les rencontres, et ils organisaient tous les soirs un "dîner social" comprenant un grand plat de pâtes et un verre de vin pour 8 euros. L'occasion idéale de parler à des personnes que l'on n'a pas encore rencontrées.

Enfin, j'eu l'occasion de rencontrer rapidement Silvia (la propriétaire) et de la remercier, elle et son équipe, pour les bonnes ondes que dégageait ce lieu et surtout pour le guide très utile comprenant des propositions d'activités, des bons plans et des adresses pour les voyageurs afin de profiter au mieux de leur séjour qu'ils avaient créé ! Un peu comme les cartes "USE-IT" mais dans un format différent.

Avant de me rendre à Venise, j'ai visité Vérone pendant une journée. Vérone a beaucoup à offrir en termes d'histoire. C'est par exemple la ville qui a vu l'amour et la mort de Roméo et Juliette, et c'est aussi la ville qui possède le huitième plus grand amphithéâtre de l'Empire romain, antérieur au Colisée de Rome ! Je te conseille vivement cette visite. Cela en vaut la peine !

Good morning/evening everyone!

I arrived in Venice, Italy three days ago. And I had such a pleasant time there but… I was just realising I had sent the last episode of this newsletter, already more than 10 days ago!

Time flies these days… 😱 I must say I am definitely enjoying my journey!

For those of you who had the chance to read the previous episode, I will make sure to pick up where you left off. For those who did not read, well you will have to hang up the train!

Let me tell you about my adventures… Are you ready?

Just after Stuttgart, I left for Munich, an interesting city in Germany where my sister currently lives and studies for a French/German Master Degree in Law. It was pretty nice to be there with her but she was in fact not that much available because of her master taking a lot of her time and mental workload. I also had to help her record a video that was compulsory for one of her courses. But let’s be honest, even if we spent quite a lot of time on it, we definitely had a good time! At least, I did! 😊

When it comes to my “Tour of Social Innovative Entrepreneurship”, I have to say the chance was not much on my side in Munich… Indeed, I tried to meet entrepreneurs twice but did not very succeed at first. 😥

For my first attempt, I went to the “SCE”, the Strascheg Center for Entrepreneurship to meet people from the “SEA”, the Social Entrepreneurship Academy, which is supposed to be a central point of contact for all those who seek to reconcile entrepreneurial action with social thinking. The problem is, it was Friday and since the covid lockdown, the majority of us are working from home on Fridays. I quickly spoke with Camila Londoño, Head of start-up promotion of the SCE who was about to enter a meeting and therefore, was not available for long.

I then decided to head to the Impact HUB of Munich as I had had a great experience in the one of Stuttgart to give it a try but no one was at the reception and the people were so deeply focused I felt like I was disturbing and finally I did not stay long.

Persistence is the way to success.

In the end, I took the direction of a place where I had already been two years ago during my first visit to Munich and where I thought I could meet some interesting people. This place is called “Bahngarten” and means – for real – “The Trains Garden”.

After hanging around for a while, I finally met an intriguing Polish woman raised in Germany, who is an artist and activist based in that quite original area. @mecmoiselle.

She made me visit her studio and explained to me a little bit about her work. She is involved in many causes including feminism, gender, roles, identity, diversity, migration, and illusion and beauty.

She had been influenced by the French movement “Les collages” by the Collectif “Collages contre les féminicides”, cofounded by Marguerite Stern. It is a militant means of expression, consisting of pasting feminist messages on the walls of public spaces. This mode of action is particularly used to denounce femicide and sexist and sexual violence, through direct action or through collectives that are usually autonomous and organised in non-mixed or chosen mixed gender.

She has also adapted it to her style and replicated it in Germany.

He has also written a book called “Pink Elephant Cooking” in partnership with Heather “Daisy” Donaldson, a German-American yogi who has been cooking all kinds of things since primary school. Solo-dollo.

After three days in Stuttgart with a friend of mine and three more in Munich with my sister, I finally had to begin my solo travel! I said goodbye to her and took the first train for Salzburg and stayed one night there. It is a nice city but I really had a better time in the following city: Innsbruck. There, I stayed a few nights in a very interesting hostel called Montagu Bed & Beers. The project behind this place is very relevant to some of the current challenges and moreover, it was one of my best experiences so far so I definitely have to tell you about it!

The Montagu Bed and Beers hostel is located in the "Villa Commonista", which consists of 3 floors. When I arrived there, I directly felt the good vibe this place and the staff working there were providing!

The hostel is a full-scale realisation of a collective project for which the themes of DIY, the famous "Do it yourself" as well as the notion of common goods were central. This allowed a link to be established between DIY and DIT ("Do it together").

The project's initiators immediately got down to work, skipping in some way the theoretical study. “DIY” as a collective practice and the participation of interested people and numerous actors have enabled the opening of this amazing space in Innsbruck's Höttinger Street, which, as a socio-cultural place, provides a platform for exchange and connection in the heart of Innsbruck. The project includes a café, a meeting room as well as a concert hall, and of course multiple dormitories for young travelers.

The ritual of "Do it yourself" as a strategy of action, enabling creation despite limited means, proves to be a prerequisite for interaction and exchange between users. This is why the term "Do it together" is now used in such projects.

In this project, the community and people are sharing things such as knowledge and skills are essential elements of theoretical thinking.

And it is actually exactly what my colleagues from the Industry and Commerce Chamber of Paris Hauts de Seine and I do.

We try to teach this mindset to early-stage entrepreneurs in our incubation and acceleration programs so that they can help each other during the incubation period.

While you could think this space is somehow anecdotic today, they actually are not the only ones to conceive such spaces and are therefore actually in the very center of the current architectural trend.

Lucky coincidence but... The Venice Biennale, which has just started and of which I had the opportunity to visit some pavilions in the last two days, is particularly focused on the current challenges and dialogue between technological artifacts, forgotten inventions, and new practices of contemporary architecture and design. The theme of the 18th International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia 2023 is The Laboratory of the Future.

The amazing people behind Montagu BedxBeers consider the current debate as well as the spatial alienations of this domain as the indicator of the performance and accomplishment of a social and societal change in the direction of the commons. Their architectural response is therefore planning a global development of the Höttinger Street space that will include every element allowing a life based on the ideology/movement of commons.

Everything from collective production, reproduction, and presentation of common goods as well as the community housing/residence under the same roof. The development and organisation of the current project, which itself is nourished by collective structures and networks also have to represent the way to a better future. In addition, prototypes will be developed as spatial interventions to meet different needs. In sum, the Villa Commonista wants to contribute, as a social innovation, to sustainable and societal development.

Je suis arrivé à Venise, en Italie, il y a trois jours. J'y ai passé un très bon moment, mais... je viens de me rendre compte que j'ai envoyé le dernier épisode de cette lettre d'information, il y a déjà plus de 10 jours !

Le temps file ces jours-ci 😱 Je dois dire que j'apprécie vraiment mon voyage !

Pour ceux d'entre vous qui ont eu la chance de lire l'épisode précédent, je vais m'assurer de reprendre là où vous vous êtes arrêtés. Pour ceux qui n'ont pas lu, il va falloir raccrocher le train ! Laisse moi te raconter mes aventures…

Juste après Stuttgart, je suis parti pour Munich, une ville allemande que j'apprécie et que j'ai déjà visité car c'est là où ma sœur vit et étudie dans le cadre d'un master en droit franco-allemand. C'était très agréable d'être avec elle, mais elle n'était pas très disponible car son master lui prenait beaucoup de temps et de charge mentale. J'ai également dû l'aider à enregistrer une vidéo obligatoire pour l'un de ses cours. Mais soyons honnêtes, même si nous y avons passé beaucoup de temps, ce fut un bon moment ! A minima, moi, je trouve que c'est le cas ! 😊

En ce qui concerne mon "Tour d'Europe de l'Entrepreneuriat Social Innovant", je dois dire que la chance n'a pas été de mon côté à Munich... En effet, j'ai essayé de rencontrer des entrepreneurs à deux reprises, mais je n'ai pas eu beaucoup de succès à Munich. 😥

Pour ma première tentative, je me suis rendu au "SCE", le Strascheg Center for Entrepreneurship, pour rencontrer des membres de la "SEA", l'Académie de l'entrepreneuriat social, qui est censée être un point de contact central pour tous ceux qui cherchent à concilier l'action entrepreneuriale avec la réflexion sociale. Le problème, c'est qu'on était vendredi et que, depuis le covid, la majorité d'entre nous travaille à domicile le vendredi. J'ai rapidement parlé à Camila Londoño, responsable de la promotion des start-ups à la SCE, qui était sur le point d'entrer en réunion et n'a donc pas été disponible longtemps.

J'ai ensuite décidé de me rendre à l'Impact HUB de Munich, car j'avais eu une excellente expérience dans celui de Stuttgart, pour essayer, mais il n'y avait personne à l’accueil et les gens étaient tellement concentrés que j'ai eu l'impression de déranger et je ne suis finalement pas restée longtemps.

L'obstination est le chemin de la réussite.

Néanmoins je n’ai pas perdu espoir. Finalement, j'ai pris la direction d'un endroit où j'étais déjà allé il y a deux ans lors de ma première visite à Munich et où je pensais pouvoir rencontrer des gens intéressants. Cet endroit s'appelle "Bahngarten" et signifie - pour de vrai - "Le jardin des trains".

Après avoir traîné un peu, j'ai rencontré une intrigante Polonaise élevée en Allemagne, qui est une artiste et une activiste basée dans cette région d'origine. @mecmoiselle.

Elle m'a fait visiter son atelier et m'a expliqué un peu son travail. Elle est engagéea dans de nombreuses causes, notamment le féminisme, le genre, les rôles, l'identité, la diversité, la migration, l'illusion et la beauté.

Elle a été influencée par le mouvement français "Les collages" du Collectif "Collages contre les féminicides", cofondé par Marguerite Stern. Il s'agit d'un moyen d'expression militant, consistant à coller des messages féministes sur les murs des espaces publics. Ce mode d'action est particulièrement utilisé pour dénoncer les féminicides et les violences sexistes et sexuelles, par le biais d'actions directes ou de collectifs généralement autonomes et organisés en non-mixité ou en mixité choisie.

Elle l'a également adapté à son style et l'a reproduit en Allemagne.

Elle m'a aussi expliqué vouloir installer son studio à Paris, donc si quelqu'un qui lit ceci peut l'aider avec un contact, un endroit, ou autre, n'hésitez pas à me le faire savoir ! Ou de lui passer le message directement !

Enfin, elle m'a présenté à Martin "Flippo" Riedel, fondateur de Kammergold, des plats cuisinés végétaliens très savoureux.

Pour l'instant, il propose 4 recettes :

• Soupe de lentilles avec des lentilles Beluga germées

• Goulasch aux morceaux de soj

• Curry à la mangue et aux pois chiches

• Sauce bolognaise au hachis de tournesol

Il a également écrit un ouvrage intitulé “Pink Elephant Cooking” en partenariat avec Heather "Daisy" Donaldson, une yogi germano-américaine qui cuisine toutes sortes de choses depuis l'école primaire. Ce livre traite de la conservation des aliments pour les débutants ! Apprendre à conserver des aliments tels que des fruits, des légumes et des plats entiers pendant longtemps et à déguster des aliments sains à partir du bocal - tout au long de l'année ! La cuisine Pink Elephant consiste à préparer les fruits et les légumes de manière à ce qu'ils aient un goût délicieux et qu'ils donnent de l'énergie au corps. Les recettes Pink Elephant sont végétaliennes, sans sucre, sans soja, riches en aliments crus, enrichies en super-aliments et, bien sûr, libres.

Après trois jours à Stuttgart avec un ami et trois autres à Munich avec ma sœur, j'allais finalement commencer mon voyage en solo ! Je dis alors au revoir à ma soeur et pris le premier train pour Salzbourg où j'ai passé une nuit. C'est une belle ville, mais j'ai vraiment passé un meilleur séjour dans la ville suivante : Innsbruck. En effet, j'ai passé quelques nuits dans une auberge très intéressante appelée Montagu Bed & Beers. Le projet derrière cet endroit est très pertinent par rapport à certains des défis actuels et, de plus, ce fut l'une de mes meilleures expériences jusqu'à présent, alors je dois absolument vous en parler !

L'auberge Montagu Bed and Beers est située dans la "Villa Commonista", sur 3 étages. Lorsque je suis arrivé, j'ai tout de suite ressenti la bonne ambiance qui régnait dans ce lieu et au sein du personnel qui y travaillait !

L'auberge est la réalisation grandeur nature d'un projet collectif pour lequel les thèmes du DIY, le fameux "Do it yourself" ainsi que la notion de biens communs étaient centraux. Cela a permis d'établir un lien entre le DIY et le DIT ("Do it together").

Les initiateurs du projet se sont immédiatement mis au travail, sautant en quelque sorte l'étude théorique. Le "DIY" en tant que pratique collective et la participation de personnes intéressées et de nombreux acteurs ont permis l'ouverture de cet espace étonnant dans la rue Höttinger d'Innsbruck, qui, en tant que lieu socioculturel, offre une plateforme d'échange et de connexion au cœur d'Innsbruck. Le projet comprend un café, une salle de réunion ainsi qu'une salle de concert, et bien sûr plusieurs dortoirs pour les jeunes voyageurs.

Le rituel du "Do it yourself" comme stratégie d'action, permettant de créer malgré des moyens limités, s'avère être une base indispensable à l'interaction et à l'échange entre les utilisateurs. C'est pourquoi le terme "Do it together" est désormais utilisé dans de tels projets.

Dans ce projet, la communauté et les personnes partageant des choses telles que des connaissances et des compétences sont des éléments essentiels de la conception théorique. C'est d’ailleurs exactement ce que mes collègues de la Chambre de commerce et d'industrie de Paris Hauts de Seine et moi-même essayons d'instaurer comme état d'esprit chez les entrepreneurs en phase de démarrage dans nos programmes d'incubation et d'accélération afin qu’ils puissent s'entre-aider durant la période d'incubation.

Il serait tendancieux de penser que cet espace est anecdotique aujourd'hui. En effet, ils sont loins d’être les seuls à concevoir de tels espaces et leur projet se trouve même au centre même de la tendance architecturale et plus globalement de la pensée actuelle.

Coïncidence étonnante mais... La Biennale de Venise qui vient de commencer et dont j’ai eu l’opportunité de visiter certains pavillon ces deux derniers jours est particulièrement axée sur les défis actuels et le dialogue entre les artefacts technologiques, les inventions oubliées et les nouvelles pratiques de l'architecture et du design contemporains. Le thème de la Biennale étant : The Laboratory of the Future.

L'équipe extraordinaire derrière Montagu BedxBeers considère les débats actuels ainsi que les changements spatiaux de ce domaine comme un indicateur de la performance et de l'accomplissement d'un changement social et sociétal dans la direction d'un meilleur partage des biens communs. Leur réponse architecturale prévoit donc un développement global de l'espace de la rue Höttinger qui inclura tous les éléments permettant une vie basée sur l'idéologie/mouvement de l'open source et des biens partagés.

Cela va de la production, de la reproduction et de la présentation collectives de biens communs au logement/à la résidence communautaire sous le même toit. Le développement et l'organisation du projet actuel, qui est lui-même alimenté par des structures et des réseaux collectifs, doivent également représenter la voie vers un avenir meilleur. En outre, des prototypes seront développés pour répondre à différents besoins. En résumé, la Villa Commonista veut contribuer, en tant qu'innovation sociale, au développement durable et sociétal dont nos sociétés ont besoin aujourd'hui.

My first steps through this European rail trip.

Greetings to you all! I was in Munich when I began writing this new episode and I’m currently in the north of Italy! But first, here is some news of my departure as well as of my first step/stop in Stuttgart!

As you now know, I decided to go first to Stuttgart, Germany. It was a decision I had planned for a long time for multiple reasons. Of which, the first is that a very close friend of mine I had not seen for almost a year, is living there. The second reason is that Stuttgart is actually the first city in Germany I discovered back in 2006 when I went for an exchange with the same family who host my dad about 50 years ago.

Also, the Stuttgart metropole, with its enormous ring of small towns is one of the biggest regions of Germany with around 2.7 million people. The third reason is that Baden-Württemberg is an interesting region: the slogan of Stuttgart for tourism and business is “Where business meets the future” and it seems kind of true on numerous points. Last but not least, it is not so far from France so it was a good starting point.

“You must start somewhere” some would say…

The early bird catches the worm

After having left the “City of Lights” in the early dark morning while the birds were singing for my departure…

I reached a high speed of more than 300 kilometers per hour a few times during the journey between Paris Gare de l’Est and Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof stopping by Strasbourg and Karlsruhe thanks to the InterCity Express (ICE).

During this three-hour journey, I met an intriguing and interesting Swiss guy named Kaspar who is one of the most well-known theatre costumes and sets designer of his generation. I told him about my project and we spoke for some time of different subjects. Before arriving in Stuttgart, I suggested we stay in touch and we exchanged our contact details. I of course invited him to sign in to my newsletter and he might hopefully read those lines one of these days!

Arriving a little later than expected in "The new heart of Europe", as this city describes itself, my friend Krishna was waiting for me at the station and we decided after a joyful reunion to go for a walk around the city center of Stuttgart.

But first, in order to be able to move around more freely, I quickly put my backpack in the very useful lockers available for as long as 24 hours for only 3 to 5 € depending on the size. We then did our quick tour around the central place, the “Schlossplatz” and went for a beer to celebrate life, us, this journey, and more at a local and authentic brewery.

Later on, we took the direction of the Mercedes-Benz Museum where I discovered quite a lot about the whole history behind the success of this traditional as well as innovative automobile brand. Indeed, Karl Benz built the first motorized tricycle, the "Patent-Motorwagen" in 1886, widely celebrated as the first internal combustion engine in a self-propelled automobile.

I must say that after the short night I had, plus the train and this quite tiring museum, I was a tiny bit exhausted. But, not yet at the end of my rope! Indeed, the Spring Festival, some traditional celebration that is similar to the well-known “Oktober Fest” but happening in April/May for 2-3 weeks was awaiting us!

We neither had the required leather pants, nor the traditional lumberjack shirt but still were allowed to quit the amusement park and enter the tents where young and less-young people are having fun, dancing on benches while singing popular German and international songs and repeating regularly:

The ending of “Ein Prosit”, a traditional German song, where they all toast to health and well-being.

Germany is a country full of resources! I (we?) already knew that but the short time I spent there during my previous experiences as well as during this new rail trip have been proving this point again.

Let me explain… Indeed, every university has its own start-up incubator program and coworking space. Whilst this is also the case in France most of the time, we do not always have the material and human resources that it really needs to make the most out of great ideas

I will speak for myself but probably some other French students who have been in touch with the entrepreneurship environment back then can relate. Places for innovative projects (as I was studying at least) mostly included an empty space with a microwave, a few chairs and tables, and sometimes a paperboard.

Fortunately, the situation has evolved since then. France has indeed considerably improved the conditions for the success of young companies over the last few years thanks to a better structuring of the actors and an improvement in all the counseling and, when necessary, reorientation between all these actors: PEPITEs, Moovje, all the mentors and the institutions...

According to the latest statistics from Statista, France is in the top 3 of Europe regarding the number of unicorns (startups valued at over 1 billion), with 25 behind Germany (29) and the UK (46).

Even if this piece of news sounds pretty good, it is relevant in the current context regarding social and environmental challenges to get a closer look at what kind of services these “unicorns” are providing. For most of them, I can for sure say they are not providing solutions to contemporary challenges.

Just as an example, the last French Unicorn “Younited” is providing access to micro-credits which are mostly used for an over-consumption of non-essential goods. We should be more grateful and proud of projects and entrepreneurs who are bringing innovative solutions to social and environmental current problematics, and less proud of those who are just speculating with money from investors and not bringing any relevant solutions.

On the other hand, we should spend more resources to help them develop their solutions. Though, this is currently a growing topic. Indeed, more and more incubators are specializing in this trend. But we still have a lot to do for it to become mainstream and not just a trend.

Moreover, when it comes to “social” entrepreneurship, Germany is doing quite well! I think they might indeed be doing very well for two main reasons:

The first reason is that the Germans have been considering climate issues for longer than we have and the German government is therefore taking the problem more seriously.

As a result, they have been putting quite some effort into creating a powerful ecosystem (successful start-ups, mentoring programs, subventions, places, and people) which is now firmly established.

As well, it must be said that supporting social entrepreneurs in an early stage is not something everyone can do in a snap. As a matter of fact, there are some knowledge requirements, and as long as you don’t have the relevant persons with the relevant knowledge and skills, you can neither help them to question themselves or to elaborate a minimum viable product with the required tools so they can test their product/service as soon as possible nor create bridges and therefore connect people with the right persons along their path.

Furthermore, during my stay in Germany, I had the chance to meet a very inspiring entrepreneur named Simon Zimmerman, CEO and founder of Solar Bakery at the Impact HUB Stuttgart. He was pleased to talk to me and took some time for a short interview during which we spoke about his project, Europe, my journey, the whole history of Solar Bakery, and of course about the future and the coming challenges Simon and his Team are about to face!

Mes premiers pas dans ce railtrip européen.

Bonjour à tous ! J'étais à Munich lorsque j'ai débuté la rédaction de ce nouvel épisodec cependant j’ai déjà fait beaucoup de route entre temps et suis actuellement dans le nord de l'Italie ! Mais tout d'abord, voici quelques nouvelles de mon départ ainsi que de ma première étape/arrêt à Stuttgart !

Comme vous le savez maintenant, j'ai décidé d'aller d'abord à Stuttgart, en Allemagne. C'est une décision que j'avais planifiée depuis longtemps pour de multiples raisons. La première est qu'un ami très proche que je n'ai pas vu depuis près d'un an vit actuellement là-bas. La deuxième raison est que Stuttgart est en fait la première ville d'Allemagne que j'ai découverte en 2006 lorsque j'ai participé à un échange avec la même famille qui avait accueilli mon père il y a environ 50 ans.

De plus, la métropole de Stuttgart, avec son énorme couronne de petites villes, est l'une des plus grandes régions d'Allemagne, avec environ 2,7 millions d'habitants. La troisième raison est que le Bade-Wurtemberg est une région intéressante : le slogan de Stuttgart pour le tourisme et les affaires est "Là où les affaires rencontrent l'avenir" et cela semble assez vrai sur de nombreux points. Enfin, le Bade-Wurtemberg n'est pas très éloigné de la France, ce qui en fait un bon point de départ.

“Il faut bien commencer quelque part” diront certains…

L'avenir appartient à ceux qui se lèvent tôt.

Après avoir quitté la "Ville Lumière" au petit matin alors que les oiseaux chantaient pour mon départ...

J’atteins plusieurs fois la barre des 300 kilomètres/heure au cours du voyage entre Paris Gare de l'Est et Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof en passant par Strasbourg et Karlsruhe grâce à l'InterCity Express (ICE).

Durant ce premier voyage, j'ai fait la rencontre d’une personne intrigante, un certain Kaspar. L'un des concepteurs de costumes et de décors de théâtre les plus connus de sa génération. Nous avons parlé de mon projet et de différents sujets pendant le trajet. Avant d'arriver à Stuttgart, je lui ai proposé de rester en contact et nous avons échangé nos coordonnées. Bien entendu, je l'ai invité à s'inscrire à ma lettre d'information et j'espère qu'il lira ces lignes un jour ou l'autre !

Arrivé un peu plus tard que prévu dans "le nouveau cœur de l'Europe" (le slogan de Stuttgart), mon ami indien Krishna m'attendait à la gare et après de joyeuses retrouvailles nous sommes partis en direction du centre de Stuttgart.

Mais avant tout, afin de pouvoir me déplacer plus librement, j'ai déposé mon sac à dos dans les casiers très pratiques mis à disposition pour une durée de 24 heures pour seulement 3 à 5 € en fonction de la taille dans la majorité des villes. J’ai alors découvert la place centrale, la “Schlossplatz" et ses environs puis nous sommes allés boire une bière à quelques encâblures pour célébrer la vie, nous, ce voyage, et plus encore en terrasse d’une brasserie locale.

Par la suite, nous avons pris la direction du musée Mercedes-Benz, où j'ai découvert pas mal de choses sur l'histoire qui se cache derrière le succès de cette marque automobile à la fois traditionnelle et innovante. En effet, Karl Benz a construit le premier tricycle motorisé, le "Patent-Motorwagen" en 1886, largement célébré comme le premier moteur à combustion interne dans une automobile automotrice.

Je dois dire qu'après la courte nuit que je venais de passer, plus le train et ce musée assez fatigant, j'étais légèrement épuisé... Mais pas pour autant à bout de force ! En effet, le Frühlingsfest, une fête traditionnelle qui célèbre le printemps et qui est assez similaire au bien connu "Oktober Fest" nous attendait !

Nous n'avions ni le pantalon de cuir ni la chemise traditionnelle à carreaux, mais nous sommes tout de même entrés dans les tentes où des jeunes et des moins jeunes Allemands venus des environs de Stuttgart dansent sur des bancs tout en chantant des chansons populaires allemandes et internationales et en répétant régulièrement :

La fin de "Ein Prosit", une chanson traditionnelle allemande, où tous portent un toast à la santé et au bien-être.

L'Allemagne est un pays plein de ressources ! Je le savais déjà mais le peu de temps que j'y ai passé lors de mes précédentes expériences ainsi que lors de ce nouveau voyage en train l'ont encore prouvé.

En effet, chaque université dispose de son propre programme d'incubation de start-up et de son espace de coworking. Bien que ce soit également le cas en France la plupart du temps, nous ne disposons pas toujours des ressources matérielles et humaines nécessaires pour tirer le meilleur parti des grandes idées.

Je vais parler pour moi, mais d'autres étudiants français qui ont été en contact avec l'environnement de l'entreprenariat à l'époque peuvent probablement en témoigner aussi. Les lieux pour les projets innovants (du moins à l'époque où j'étudiais) comprenaient principalement un espace vide avec un micro-ondes, quelques chaises et tables, et parfois un carton.

Fort heureusement, la situation a évolué depuis. La France a en effet considérablement amélioré les conditions de réussite des jeunes entreprises au cours des dernières années grâce à une meilleure structuration des acteurs et à une amélioration de l'ensemble des conseils et, le cas échéant, des réorientations entre tous ces acteurs : PEPITEs, Moovje, les Chambres de Commerce et d’Industrie ainqi que tous les mentors et les institutions...

Selon les dernières statistiques de Statista, la France se situe dans le top 3 européen en ce qui concerne le nombre de licornes (startups valorisées à plus d'un milliard), avec un total de 25 derrière l'Allemagne (29) et le Royaume-Uni (46).

Même si cette nouvelle semble plutôt bonne, il est pertinent, dans le contexte actuel des défis sociaux et environnementaux, d'examiner de plus près le type de services fournis par ces "licornes". Pour la plupart d'entre elles, je peux affirmer avec certitude qu'elles n'apportent pas de solutions aux défis contemporains.

A titre d'exemple, la dernière licorne française "Younited" donne accès à des micro-crédits qui sont principalement utilisés pour une surconsommation de biens non essentiels. Nous devrions être plus reconnaissants et fiers des projets et des entrepreneurs qui apportent des solutions innovantes aux problèmes sociaux et environnementaux actuels, et moins fiers de ceux qui ne font que spéculer avec l'argent des investisseurs sans apporter de solutions pertinentes.

D'autre part, nous devrions consacrer davantage de ressources pour les aider à développer leurs solutions. Il s'agit d'un sujet en pleine expansion. En effet, de plus en plus d'incubateurs à l'instar du Positiv'Incuba'School de la CCI des Hauts-de-Seine et soutenu par le conseil départemental se spécialisent dans cette tendance. Mais nous avons encore beaucoup à faire pour qu'elle devienne un courant dominant et non une simple tendance.

Par ailleurs, en matière d'entrepreneuriat "social", l'Allemagne s'en sort plutôt bien ! Je pense qu'il y a deux raisons principales à cela :

La première est que les Allemands s'intéressent aux questions climatiques depuis plus longtemps que nous et que le gouvernement allemand prend donc le problème plus au sérieux.

En conséquence, ils ont déployé des efforts considérables pour créer un puissant écosystème (start-ups prospères, programmes de mentorat, subventions, lieux et personnes) qui est aujourd'hui solidement établi.

En outre, il faut dire que soutenir les entrepreneurs sociaux à un stade précoce n'est pas quelque chose que tout le monde peut faire en un clin d'œil. En effet, certaines connaissances sont requises et tant que vous ne disposez pas des personnes compétentes ayant les connaissances et les compétences requises, vous ne pouvez ni les aider à se remettre en question ou à élaborer un produit minimum viable avec les outils requis afin qu'ils puissent tester leur produit/service dès que possible, ni créer des ponts et donc mettre les personnes en contact avec les bonnes personnes tout au long de leur parcours.

En outre, pendant mon séjour en Allemagne, j'ai eu la chance de rencontrer un entrepreneur très inspirant, Simon Zimmerman, PDG et fondateur de SolarBakery, à l'Impact HUB Stuttgart. Il a été ravi de me parler et a pris le temps de m'accorder une courte interview au cours de laquelle nous avons parlé de son projet, de l'Europe, de mon parcours, de toute l'histoire de Solar Bakery et, bien sûr, de l'avenir et des défis que Simon et son équipe s'apprêtent à relever !

Back to Paris

When I came back to Paris in mid-September 2022 after my second six-month experience in Germany, I was very pleased to be back, although I really enjoyed Dresden and Düsseldorf as places to live. Indeed, the lifestyle in these two German cities is much more peaceful and relaxing than the one I'm used to in Paris. But don't get me wrong, these cities are also overflowing with things to discover, taste, and experience, as well as a particularly pleasant living environment. Decisions are made to be taken.

However, shortly after my arrival, I had to deal with a difficult decision.

I was offered a stable and financially interesting position as Business Developer in a French-German agency in Mannheim, Germany but I wanted to stay in Paris because of certain projects including the second edition of the USE-IT map of Paris and I had at that time no option to secure a position in Paris. Furthermore, I wanted a job that was more meaningful regarding the current social and environmental challenges.

Opportunities are meant to be seized.

Fortunately, thanks to my entrepreneurial profile, I had the chance to go to a round-table meeting about entrepreneurship in Cagliari, Sardegna organized by the EDUC Alliance, an alliance of Universities of which my University was part.

Through this truly integrated European “UniverCity” with students, researchers, and administrative staff who learn, impart, work, and collaborate at universities differing in size, age, native languages, and focus, the goal is to develop strong ties and projects between local environments to tackle global challenges of the 21st century.

During this think tank meeting, we discussed and thought about policies in order for universities to better promote entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurial mindset so that students develop more relevant projects, and gain experience, skills as well as confidence during their studies.

I was very happy to participate in this think tank especially since it allowed me to meet an elected official of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Hauts-de-Seine (Paris) who, after having appreciated my speaking engagements, decided to take my CV and subsequently arranged a first interview at the CCI.

I was finally recruited and began my mission in early November at the Positiv’Incuba’School, the incubator for impactful projects (in the social and environmental domains) of the Hauts-de-Seine, Paris - Île de France.

I quickly gained confidence and have really enjoyed my assignments, my environment, and my colleagues as well as the inspiring entrepreneurs I met during those last six months. However, now is the right time to leave! Leaving yes, but hopefully for a better return!

Interrail 2023 - Where am I going?

Well, the list is quite long but it includes Germany (again yes!), Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Poland, Germany again, Danemark, Netherlands, and Belgium.

For those who know Kraftwerk, this song represents my journey quite well.

Indeed, I’m leaving Paris in the morning, stopping in Vienna around the middle of my journey as well as Düsseldorf City where I lived for 6 months recently.

What am I going to do during those 3 months?

I have found exactly what I want to do during my trip. And no it is not spending my days drinking Caïpirinha on terraces all over Europe. 😅

First of all, it is a unique chance for me to discover myself. And I will take this opportunity as seriously as possible. Indeed, going abroad alone for some time is a good way to go into introspection and know yourself better.

Second, my first interrail trip back in 2013 with two very close friends of mine was my best travel ever and I hope this new rail trip will be even more interesting than the first one. Indeed, meeting new people and cultures, tasting new recipes and food specialties as well as discovering new places have always been pleasant to me. And it’s an even more interesting journey when you go by train rather than by car or by plane.

Third, and this might be the most relevant part, I am also planning to “combine pleasure with business”. Meaning, I will be visiting entrepreneurial hubs, incubators, and innovation centers, meeting inspiring entrepreneurs, creating bridges, and dialoguing with the people I will meet in order to help them develop their projects and eventually achieve their goals.

If you know some place or someone who might be relevant for me (and for her/him) to meet/visit, please feel free to give me a heads-up! It will be my pleasure to interview and help them!

Now what?

Now let’s go! I actually already begun my journey! This morning, quite early…

And my first destination is... Stuttgart! A flourishing city in Germany that I already visited about 16 years ago. Who will I meet there? What will I discover? You might find out soon.

De retour à Paris

À mon retour à Paris mi-septembre 2022, après ma deuxième expérience en Allemagne, j'étais ravi de rentrer, même si j'ai beaucoup apprécié vivre à Dresde et Düsseldorf. En effet, le style et le rythme de vie dans ces deux villes est beaucoup plus paisible et relaxant que celui auquel je suis habitué à Paris. Mais ne vous méprenez pas, ces villes regorgent également de choses à découvrir, à goûter, à expérimenter, ainsi que d'un cadre de vie particulièrement agréable. Les décisions sont faites pour être prises

Cependant, peu après mon arrivée, j'ai dû prendre une décision difficile.

J'ai reçu une offre d'emploi stable et financièrement intéressante en tant que Business Developer dans une agence franco-allemande à Mannheim, en Allemagne. Mais je souhaitais rester à Paris en raison de certains projets, notamment la deuxième édition de la carte USE-IT de Paris, et je n'avais alors aucune piste sérieuse et intéressante pour un poste à Paris. D’autant plus que je souhaitais un emploi qui soit porteur de sens face aux défis sociaux et environnementaux actuels.

Les opportunités sont faites pour être saisies.

Par chance, grâce à mon profil d'entrepreneur, j'ai pu participer à une table ronde sur le thème de l'entrepreneuriat à Cagliari, en Sardaigne, organisée par EDUC, une alliance d'universités dont mon université faisait partie.

Au travers de cette "UniverCity" européenne réellement engagée, dans laquelle les étudiants, les chercheurs et le corps administratif apprennent, transmettent, travaillent et collaborent dans des universités de taille, d'âge, de langue et d'orientation différents, l'objectif est de renforcer les liens et de développer des projets entre les différents sites afin de relever les défis majeurs du 21e siècle.

Au cours de cette table ronde, nous avons débattu et réfléchi à des stratégies permettant aux universités de mieux promouvoir l'entrepreneuriat, afin que les étudiants puissent développer des solutions pertinentes et acquérir de l'expérience, des compétences et de l'assurance au cours de leurs études.

J'ai eu le plaisir de participer à ce think tank qui m'a également permis de rencontrer un élu de la Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie des Hauts-de-Seine (Paris) qui, après avoir été sensible à mes interventions, a décidé de prendre mon CV et d'organiser par la suite un premier entretien à la CCI.

J'ai finalement été recruté et j'ai commencé ma mission début novembre au Positiv’Incuba’School, l'incubateur de projets à impact (sur les problématiques sociales et environnementales) des Hauts-de-Seine, Paris - Île de France.

J'ai rapidement gagné en confiance et ai vraiment apprécié mes missions, mon environnement et mes collègues, ainsi que les entrepreneurs inspirants que j'ai rencontrés au cours de ces six derniers mois. Toutefois, le moment est venu de partir !

Partir oui, mais pour mieux revenir, je l'espère !

Interrail 2023 - Quelle est ma destination ?

La liste est assez longue, mais elle comprend l'Allemagne (encore oui !), l'Autriche, la Suisse, l'Italie, la Grèce, la Bulgarie, la Serbie, la Roumanie, la Hongrie, la Slovaquie, la Slovénie, la République tchèque, la Pologne, l'Allemagne à nouveau, le Danemark, les Pays-Bas et la Belgique.

Pour ceux qui connaissent Kraftwerk, cette chanson représente assez bien mon parcours.

En effet, j’ai quitté Paris très tôt le matin, je prévois de faire une halte à Vienne au milieu de mon voyage avant de rejoindre la ville de Düsseldorf où j'ai récemment vécu pendant 6 mois.

Que vais-je faire pendant ces trois mois ?

J'ai fini par trouver comment donner du sens à ce voyage. Et non, ce n'est pas passer mes journées à boire de la Caïpirinha sur les terrasses de toute l'Europe. 😅

Tout d'abord, c'est une chance unique pour moi de me découvrir. Et je vais prendre cette opportunité le plus au sérieux possible. En effet, partir seul à l'étranger pendant un certain temps est un bon moyen de rentrer en introspection et de mieux se connaître.

Deuxièmement, mon premier voyage interrail en 2013 avec deux amis très proches a été un souvenir mémorable et j'espère que ce nouveau rail trip le sera davantage. En effet, rencontrer de nouvelles personnes et cultures, goûter de nouvelles recettes et spécialités culinaires, ainsi que découvrir de nouveaux endroits ont toujours été pour moi des expériences enrichissantes. Et c'est un voyage encore plus passionnant lorsqu'on prend le train plutôt que la voiture ou l'avion.

Troisièmement, et c'est peut-être la partie la plus pertinente, je prévois également de joindre l'utile à l'agréable. Cela sous-entend que je visiterai des centres de recherche et développement, des incubateurs et des centres d'innovation, que je rencontrerai des entrepreneurs inspirants, que je créerai des passerelles et que je dialoguerai avec les personnes que je croiserai sur ma route afin de les aider à développer leurs projets et, à terme, à atteindre leurs objectifs.

D'ailleurs, si vous connaissez un endroit ou une personne qu'il serait intéressant pour moi (et pour lui/elle) de rencontrer/visiter, n'hésitez pas à m'en informer ! Je me ferai un plaisir de les interviewer et de les aider !

Et maintenant ?

Maintenant, c'est parti ! En fait, j'ai déjà commencé mon voyage ! Ce matin, dimanche 30 avril, très tôt...

Et ma première destination est... Stuttgart ! Une ville florissante d'Allemagne que j'ai déjà visitée il y a 16 ans. Qui vais-je rencontrer là-bas ? Que vais-je découvrir ? Vous le saurez peut-être bientôt.

Welcome to the very first edition of the Lorenzou’sletter!

I’m finally taking a moment to write this morning.
To write to you. To write for me. Anyway…

Just putting some thoughts on the paper… Actually typing on a keyboard.
It’s 2022, you better live with your time!

There we go!

So, once again, my life choices have brought me back to this beautawful town: Paris.

I write it and mean it. Because like almost every big city, Paris has a two-sided face!

✔ On the A side, its great postcards landscapes, modern and classic Haussmannian architecture, fancy everyday culture, a friendly atmosphere, and incredible nightlife.

❌ On the B side, the expensive costs of living, the sometimes very dirty streets, the aggressiveness of people, and the stressful rhythm of life.

But still, I have to reckon it’s good to be back. It is true that I have A LOT here: friends and family, places and habits, opportunities, and projects (see below)!

But moreover, one important thing: A LOT to discover/experience still. 👁‍🗨

The whole north/east Parisian lifestyle for example.

Just so everyone understands: Parisian life is quite different whether you’re living in the family-friendly very calm 15th arrondissement (southwest) or the very eclectic and fancy 10th (northeast).

It might sound a bit cliché but I remember reading the introduction of a book written by some Parisian girl who left the south part of Paris for the north and discovered what Paris really is. I want to complete my Paris course so I can be able to say I know Paris well. I did study tourism here, I must say! I have even guided people and written a few reviews here and there on Google Maps. Today, it may be the reason I am writing those lines, I even received a (very tiny) reward from Google for my participation in the Local Guide Program, of which I am very proud of. 😎😂

Whatever. I have indeed interesting job opportunities back in Germany but I think I will stay in Paris and find opportunities here. 🔛 On the side, I have also the project “Les Panamiens” to take on. Let me tell you about it!

My next project

1/ I have followed Maud Alavès on Linkedin for a while. She does some inspiring content there and also on substack. You should definitely follow her! 😉

2/ One day, she posted about the association “Les Panamiens” which she founded a few years back with two friends of hers. The goal is “to share the real daily life of Parisians, with its crowded metro, its beers on the platforms, and its cigarettes on the terrace”. Furthermore, they had worked for almost two years long on a great project: an incredibly relevant map of Paris for young travelers willing to experience the best out of their stay in the city of lights. ⚜

The result is amazing! 🗺️
